I ran into this with one of the new ratchet bendixes for my 51 merc engine. I did not use it because it would not allow me to install the starter without removing the starter plate from the bell housing. I believe that is what you will have to do. Remove the starter mounting plate, install the starter to it and reinstall the assembly. More trouble than I was willing to go through. I bought a used bendix. installed it and threw a spare bendix spring in my tool box. The new ratchet style bendix is still sitting on my shelf.

|BigChevyFTW||as long as your original one wasnt smaller due to wear id say they gave you the wrong bendix gear. im sure with patients you can grind it down to make it the right size.|

|Duster 340||Yes, I have, and no, I didn't have to make modifications. If it was me, I would see if I could get it to fit, then jut try it and see if it will engage. Thats all you can do. I did see a bendix listed on Ebay, you might want to ask him and see what he has to say.|

Aftermarket Bendex for Flathead
I am new to the forum. I have '29 Ford Model A with a 1953 Flathead V8.
I had the starter rebuilt, and bought an aftermarket bendex for the starter.
You can no longer buy the stock bendex.
The new bendex is bigger in diameter and won't go all the way into the housing.
I have used a dremel and shaved off a little of the edge of the housing, but am concerned that it won't clear the flywheel.
Has anyone else used an aftermarket bendex? If yes, have you had to make any modifications?
