f150 and F250 rears have big brakes and bolt patterns that make it difficult to find wheels suitable..what I woundup with was a 9 inch to which we installed the explorer ends and disk brakes. also got the width that I need that way..

|big gear head||F150 rear ends are 8.8 and 9.5. You can check the size, gear ratio and differential by looking at the tag. There will be a top row and bottom row of numbers and letters on the tag. The bottom row will have the information that you need. Starting next to the bolt hole will be the gear ratio. It will be something like 3.73 or 3L.73. If it has the L then it's a Trac Lock. If it doesn't have the L then it's a standard differential. The next set of numbers will be the ring gear size. If it says 8.8 then it's the 8.8 rear end. So if it's 3L.73 8.8 then you have a 3.73 gears with Trac Lock and 8.8 gear.|

The width I need is about 1.5 inches wider than the explorer- I had assumed the Excursion and Expedition would be wider and maybe heavier due to the larger size of the SUV. But a F150 rear is a 7.5 I think, dont people look for the 8.8 to replace the 7.5? That is a shock- and would explain why there is no talk on here about those rear ends.
That is why I am asking, I know there had to be a reason-- I thought maybe because the Explorer was cheaper and most folks dont need anything wider.

The Expedition is basically an F-150 rear end, and the Excursion is an F-250 Super Duty rear end. What are you trying to do? F-150 and Expedition rear-ends are probably the easiest to find, and therefore the cheapest. They offered open differential or traction-lok, and at least 3-4 different gear ratios.
Expedition's went to independent rear suspension in about 2003, so the newer ones would not have a standard straight axle.

Explorer, Excursion and Expedition rearends
Please tell me Excursion and Expedition are not good rearends to use so I can stop thinking about these.
The Explorer rearend could work, but the Explorer is too narrow so I would need spacers and the right wheel offset.
Maybe 2 Explorer long axles on one pumpkin??????
