LATECH You want to run a coil and ballast if necessary, to achieve a 4 OHM resistance across both.
If you have a coil with a 2.5 OHM primary circuit, add a ballast of 1.5 OHMS to achieve 4 OHMS.
4 Ohms divided into 12 volts is 3 Amps. Thats pretty much what a points setup is capable of running without burning up points. AND seeing how the pertronix is a points REPLACEMENT then you need to keep in line with what the points would be using.
If you want High Energy Ignition, use a magnetic trigger style dizzy and an MSD or GM HEI Module mounted to a heat sink. They can run a lower Impedance coil, like 2.2 OHMS.. and 2.2 OHMS divided into 12 is about 5.5, which is what the GM HEI will comfotably run at. From what I have read ,the GM module limits current to about 5.5, if you run a lower impedance (resistance) coil it wont hurt it as the current limiting part (called a darlington) of the module keeps it at about 5.5 amps.

ck the resistance of the coil..

if the coil has zero resist the u should use a ballast resistor. i used a reg chebby coil on my pertronix for yrs no problem.. changed to one of those super coils and didn't take a reading.. didn't take long to smoke test the pertronix... put in the old coil and replaced with mallory pointless... they had them at autozone. that was about 2 yrs ago..

saunders I have put 12 volts to the coil that was used with the points.The instructions didn't mention bypassing the resister,but had seen on another car they had.The instructions didn't mention replacing the coil but spects.in the coil ads say for points or breaker less ign.didn't see a big diff, between the two.Both are induction coils.I'm going to regap the plugs to .045,just thought the coil should be changed.After researching it appears the spark length is important.

The question is whether the Pertronix unit needs a ballast resistor or not, and whether the coil is made for a ballast resistor to be used or not.

I replaced my dualpoints with a pertronix igniter 111.Do I need to replace my coil it'a mallory, with I think, 40,000 volts.what are the important stats yoltage,quick spark ,turns ratio.I'm thinking a petronix flame-thrower II.Probably making this more difficult then need be.Any help or opinions are appreciated.
