bentrod Sorry for the delay on this. I reread then understood what you ment, and did exactly that; remove the return and let fresh fluid pump out the gunk.

FWIW the box was exposed (lines off it) and pretty much under water for 2 days, however it seemed there was little if any water/gunk in it. Still, glad it was taken care of for piece of mind.

Thanks again

LATECH You are welcome. Not sure, but you must have miss typed . I suggested using a simple vacuum cap on the Power steering pump return hook up.
In your response you said Vacuum pump. I am assuming you meant to type vacuum cap. Or ? maybe you mis understood me? Let me know.

bentrod thanks LATECH,

havent responded because I haven't had a chance to try it yet. Didn't think of using a vacuum pump, sounds like it could work. I will update on how it goes.

LATECH Sure. Unhook the return line at the pump. Plug the port for the return line on the pump. Use a simple vacuum cap.
Then put the return hose from the box into a container and put a funnel in the pump. Have your buddy start the engine and turn the wheel back and forth as you feed the pump fluid through the funnel.Do this untill the fluid clears up.
Then re attach the return line to the pump and re fill system. Voila.

Flush power steering box?

so the story goes...Last year I pulled the engine from my truck 1 week before it randomly flooded in my area.

Now I'm getting ready to put my new engine in and just realized that my steering box on the truck was submerged and could have water in it. I'd like to flush it just to be safe.

has anybody done this before without taking the unit out? I look and there's no drain plug or anything
