|blakblur||Lets say instead of getting a whole new motor, I rebuild an old one. Chances are its gonna be a chevy 350 from the 1969-1980 era. It's a big gap I know, but I'm not looking for any certain model. I've been looking at some 1980-1984 El caminos, and some 70s, early eighties corvettes. There cheap because the engines never came with alot of horses as we all know. I'm gonna need some stuff for it, i dont know where to start. I want it to meet the specifications that i desire (great performance, driveability). Please give me all the suggestions you can, starting from part to part and how it helped the total performance of your car. Thanks a million.|

|bud-23||Hey Blakblur you might think about building your own small block chevy. I put one together for less than 5k. I have a 350 bored .030 (355 cu) with 8:1 pistons, comp cam, comp gear drive, holly 770, and a b@m 177 blower. This put out 510 on the dyno. This gives you all the hp you need. As for a trans I would use a 700R4. With the overdrive you can use a rearend gear around 4:00 I have my engine in an 1800 lb car and I get between 9-10 mpg Good luck on your hot rod. Bud.|

Muscle Car Buildup
A GM crate motor from a dealer such as Scoggin-Dickey, Burt Greenwald or others will run you about $4600 for a 454 big block with 425 hp. At that level, I'd suggest a 12-bolt rearend from Currie, Mark Williams etc. as that will make the hookup to your chassis easier. As far as daily driveability is concerned, I'd forget a Turbo 400 and think of the more modern GM trans as you could run something like a 3.91 or 4.11 diff but take advantage of the overdrive ratio and have a lot smoother cruising on the Intestate.

For rear ends, complete clips, Ladder/4 link bars, axles, etc., go to Moser Engineering, Currie, Chris Alston Chassis Works, Art Morrison, or Competition Engineering.

You might be able to buy a cheaper, smaller/lighter engine with forged pistons and a little lower compression and run a 100-150 shot of nitrous for a little cheaper.
Plus = car weighs less, gets better mileage, cool set up
Minus = little harder to set up, requires more tuning
what ever you plan on doing make sure you have fun

400 to 475hp is gonna put you in the 502cid range for a crate engine. Scoggins-Dickey, or Pace Performance is the place to buy a GM crate engine. I have found that the prices are all very close on a given engine, shipping is where they really get to you. When I bought my crate engine Jegs wanted $179 to ship it. Pace shipped it for $49, they had a special on shipping going when I ordered it. I don't know what the shipping is normally...good luck.

Muscle car from the ground up
I'm looking to build a muscle car from the ground up. Well actually all I consider changing is the Engine, tranny and rear end. I would like some suggestions on the following:
1.crate engines,probably gonna be a chevy, ideally 400-475hp (Where to buy a turnkey?)
2. automatic transmission (B&M Turbo 400?)
3. Rear end (What size and where to find em?)
I'm looking for street ability as well as strip cababilities. I would like the car to be reliable enough for Sunday driving, yet deliver enough horsepower and speed for a good 1/4 mile and 0-60 time. I have about 5-6k for the engine, 1-1.5k for the tranny and i'm not sure how much a rear end will be.
If you have any suggestions or opinions please feel free to respond. I could really use the advice. Thanks.
