The problem is there is NO rule as to what head size the bolt is going to have. Thus the reason I wrote the "Basics of Basics" Nuts and Bolts Click here Your explanation is a good one for a general idea though.
I am fascinated at how many "pros" I have worked with that don't get this concept, fascinated! Asking for a 6mm bolt calling it a "ten". insert rolling eyes smilie

Did you know
If ask for a 1/2 bolt, what do you get? a bolt with a 1/2 diam., or 1/2 head? I learned in the steel ind. take the bolt diam. add 1/2 as much (1/2 +1/4 = 3/4)to it + 1/16 for the bolt head size. On Ind. bolts use the same except add 1/8 for the ind. nut size instead of 1/16"
To find the bolt dia. subtract the add-on (1/16 or 1/8) and devide by 3 then mult. by 2.
I had to get some mm bolots and nut the other day. I took 1mm from the head of a bolt (10mm) and got 9, then divided by 3 to get 3 then muli. b+y 2 and got 6. And would you believe it worked.
Hope this helps someone.
