Your several questions/answers depend on the engine.
Some engines use a seal on the camshaft end to retain lube. Most american OHV V-8 that we deal with have a soft plug installed to retain lube. Cams can be removed from the rear on many engines. One example a few people on here can remember is the Chevette or the Pinto.
Some camshafts are open to the front/rear of an engine to drive various accessories. Distrib, pumps etc.

General Engine questions
May be a dumb question, but I haven't really had much experience with working on engines to a great extent, but I am quite interested in them.
I have been watching some videos on camshaft installation, and had some questions. When they put the camshaft in, the back of the camshaft is exposed on the back of the engine. They don't show installing a seal or anything. Is there supposed to be a freeze plug or seal? Wouldn't it leak oil? Can the camshaft slide out the back of the engine if you have the cam timing gear off and push it?
