And, John, I couldn't remember the WLS call letters but I too have spent a many late hour with my radio tucked under my pillow since I was supposed to be asleep. Concerning the Purple People Eater, it was always fun to hear the many "Gimmicks" that D.J.s used to attract listeners. Alan Freed, Wolfman and others were the tops in that field. I also listened to a strong station from Oklahoma City but I can't remember the call letters. Fun stuff remembering the "daze" ain't it?

Funny story.....When WAKY came on the air for the first week they played nothing but Purple People Eater. They would announce something like Johnny Horton's Battle of New Orleans but play Purple People Eater. Over and over and over.

Talk about smart marketing. That was all people were talking about for days......

John
John that wasn't marketing, THAT was the "Payola Roll Blue's!:

whinny You guys got a decade on me, must taken that long for them songs to reach down under, but I remember them every Sunday on the radio requests show. As an aside WR, I knew you were from Texas but often wondered why your location is tejas! I watched an Australian programme last night called my kitchen rules. A guy and his daughter are contestants. He said he's a Texan from tejas the name of an Indian tribe from Texas area. Learnt something without google or wiki!!
