well i was tightening my TH400 mount to the crossmember and "pop" the bolt falls loose. shreds of metal in the threads. has anyone ever used a tap and die set on a trans case? can i sleeve it? Im trying very hard not to freak out right now ive been dealing with this swap for 3 months now and i just want to drive my friggin truck.
Do i tap it to a bigger size bolt?
You can buy a thread insert kit for the bolt size that you need from your local parts store. The kit will come with a drill bit, a tap, thread inserts and an insert installer. You will then be able to re-install the original bolt after cleaning the aluminum out of the threads. Be careful not to drill to deep. The bit will want to grab in aluminum. A trick that I use is to grind the leading edge of the drill bit flat so that it scrapes the aluminum off instead of cutting it.
Instead of the heli-coil I ended up threading in a longer bolt with a nut up top. Didnt think there was going to be enough clearance for the nut but what do you know it fits perfectly..
