|mrclod||Hello 66GMC, Your tips are convincing. The contacts didn't look to "worn thin" so I cleaned them up with cloth and put it back together. Same problem ! I plan to buy the kit.|

I visited CVR's website, and it looks like they are using a Nippon-Denso starter as a base, and then providing a bunch of different adapter plates.
Nippon-Denso starters are very good overall, but their weak point was always the solenoid contacts, which are usually available seperately from nearly any electrical rebuilder.
ND1960KIT is for the ProTorque / ND19750 for the Protorque Maximum.
My bet is that these copper contacts have been arcing (Do you ever get the click but no crank ... click ... click ... crank scenario?)
What will happen on occasion is that the contacts will arc and fuse together, which causes the condition that you describe.

Sounds like a defective solenoid, IMO.
When you say "Hi tork starter" are you talking about one like this?

high tork starter problem
When I energize the starter on my BBC, the bendix stays engaged and keeps spinning until I disconnect power. I removed the starter and the problem remains even on the workbench. The only way to stop the starter is to remove the jumper cables used to power it up. I hate to buy a bendix and throw good money away if it's something more than that. Any ideas ?
