What are the reprecusions of having a worn TV cable? I know mine is worn becaus eit won't ratchet back to the stock location when I reset it and mash the accelorator...4 is stock, it goes to 5(where it has been set for a while I imagine(only had car for like 2 months)) It will stay in the 4th ratchet but, the shifts are too slushy and the tranny slips into 3rd a little, and the harder shift helps a little.(I plan on getting a shift kit for it eventually) Should I go ahead and replace it? or should I wait until i get the kit? or should I even worry about it?

well, normally, when I post, I DO get a response that answers my question. To put it simply, should I replace my worn throddle valve cable or should I not worry about the fact that it is worn? Do worn TV cable have any negative affects on the transmission?

If it is worn and you seem to know it is, why ask?
Or leave it ´till it breaks, then you´ll probably have doubled the work load.
BTW how does a trans slip into third "a little"?
Would´nt it be better to fit a shift kit when it is functioning
properly?
More questions than answers!

cable worn out

It would help to know what your working on a bit more, but the old myth of setting a t/v cable that way is not always the best and I don't set anything that way but old ford axod tranny. I use the seat on my pants way set the cable drive.... re-set as need for shift time but more important shift feel is what I need to be happy with.Im sure someone will say get out the oil pressure gage and set it with that but with me since I rebuild them I know what a GOOD shift feels like then I know shift pressure is correct and this unit will last.

I would think with the constant talk of how important the TV adjustment on trannys that operate only with this TV cable..... it would be an obvious answer.

replace the cable.

airworld2 could not have said it any better, an experienced tranny person knows when things are happening correctly.

Have you serviced the tranny lately? Mayb a fresh filter and fluid will help the TV cable function better?

;)

I would think that an experienced tranny person should be able to see thru the computer and tell how that shift feels and know if his is working properly, or atleast what he is working on.

For a very LONG time I have heard how an out of adjustment TV cable or kickdown rod can cause premature failure of the trans and my question is , how, what and why does the trans fail? If you buy a shift kit does that mean you don't need a TV or kickdown actuator anymore? Thanks.

If the TV cable tells the trans that your throttle is only open a little bit, the trans thinks you're driving like Grandma & it allows the clutches to slip, causing a smoother shift. If the cable is giving the wrong message and you've got the pedal to the metal, it will still let the clutches slip under the heavy load, causing rapid wear.

Do you need it no matter what? Like in the case of a shift kit or a high stall convertor? If this cable/rod is capable of destroying an expensive trans in short time shouldn't there be a more definitive answer on how to set up an actuator cable or rod? or is this best left in the hands of a transmission shop?

Different cars/transmissions have different proceedures for adjusting the cable/linkage. Since it has never been indicated what is being worked on, specifics are hard to post, but they can be found in service manuals for that particular vehicle/trans.
