steeny I'll chime in......freshening up the LT1 in the wife's 95 Vette. It is all factory stock with 85k on the clock. Of course I am going to "wake up" the mouse some! Next will be new leather for the seats (they aren't bad or torn, just old looking). Already have the paint gleaming and the wheels shining with new rubber.

I got an email back from the guy I bought it from he never tried to start it but was told it ran. He is the one you took it apart. At this point, I'm going to pull the front cover and see if I can find any markings on the cam to identify it. Then I will pull the plugs, squirt oil in the cylinders and let it crank for a while to lube them up. Then take a static compression reading. If they all read good, I'll put it together and fire it up.


You might get lucky and find marks,i think all I have used have been marked on the rear, at the cam plug,,Do you have a magnetic base dial indicator and a solid lifter you can measure the lift at the lifter then multiply that by 1.5 it will give you the size of the cam or 1.6 depends on your rockers.

Should have been L79 not L78 that is a 396 / 375 HP..

496CHEVY3100 small jornal 327 don't have center bolts ,unless some one drilled and tapped them ,which makes them weaker ..the L78 327/350 hp had finned balancers and were balanced for hp use

Balancer is smooth BUT there is no center bolt either, so who knows if it was changed ???

No time to dig any further for the next couple days, dang it...

The Duntov was my first thought too, David, since the rockers had some play in them. Upon further looking, they are hydraulic lifters. They were all collapsed from no oil for many years. Near as I can tell, it hasn't run for about 10 years. I'm going to drop my priming dizzy in and run it with a drill until I get oil out the push rods.

The starter and wiring were still in place, so I put a battery in and jumped the harness plug. The starter works and the engine spun over immediately. I then connected the oil pressure gauge I found in a box, set the manifold and distributor on and cranked it for a couple minutes to see what would happen. No funny noises from inside and 40 lbs of oil pressure cranking !!! Now I gotta dig in and see what the story is here. It codes out as a 1964 327 from a Chevelle. The 461 head codes are from late '65, so it's obviously not stock.
