In a '73 it should be a 1600 Dual port. Dual carb is a common and pretty cheap conversion. I would have done it to my '74 but the left side carb would not have fit with the autostick shift solenoid being right there..
The blower housing looks stock, just painted white and not black. I don't think the engine has had much work done to it. Usually the common upgrade is a degree indexed crank pulley. Makes it easier to time them

I am not sure where it came from but if it looks factory and you cant figure what Bug it came from it may be from another car that had this engine. The gia and the 914 had higher hp than the bug version. back in the day before jc whitney and every one else sold bug parts its was common to swap for the 53+ hp versions. No one does it anymore since its very cheap to rebuild now with hop up parts. Actually stock parts my be harder to come by.
After market fan shroud was popular in colder climates as well. These make the engines look different but cant tell if that is one since I have not been under a hood of a vw in years.

|S10 Racer||Back in my younger days I raced dune buggies and got well aquainted with those little VW motors. It's pretty amazing that you can make those things outrun a V8. The motors are very simple once you do one. Mine started out as a 1500cc stock motor. I changed it to an 1835cc with dual Dellorto carbs and nitrous. It ran great till I missed second gear once.|

That is one of the most simple motors ever, it won't take long to get with it. I think that is a hot rod distributor most everyone uses them, I remember a name something like 006 or something like that,but I think that is what it is. Unless you are going to change a ring or something knowing the exact displacement isn't important, it's a "1600" pretty much. The carbs and intakes are aftermarket, no big deal. Really, don't over think it, this is simplicity at it's finest.

|S10 Racer||You can't tell what cc it is from the outside. To change the cc, you change the piston jug size instead of boring it out. It looks like a normal VW motor to me. The exception is the dual carbs that someone installed. The carbs you have should either be Dellorto or Weber.|

Okay, what type of engine is this really?
We need help to identifing this engine, we thought it was a 1600cc dual carb, not sure any more it doesn't look like any of the ones I have seen so far. It is in our new 1973 beetle, which over the years has been modified again and again...Help us please and thank you. (PS in the pic, the carbs. are off being cleaned)
