That bung that you installed to your pan for the sending unit, is it just sealed by compression with rubber gaskets?

This is where mine is located and as far as I'm concerned, close enough for anything I'm doing with my car (trans. temp. runs within a couple degrees of the engine coolant temp (175-180 on a 90 degree day):

I would like to know where the best location to install a temperature sending unit for the transmission is and why?
