MARTINSR You know the shame is that those early stars got ripped off all the time. They could do a song like this and the manager would rip them off putting his name on the record as the writer or co-writer and get a bunch of the money the ARTIST deserved. Norman Petty did this with Buddy Holly. There were lots of legendary artists who got pennies for songs that are pieces of American pop history, HUGE songs.

So sad they didn't live out their lives like they could have if not for the greedy thieves who ripped them off.

evolvo Right next to Ben E. King's obit in the paper this morning was the news that
B. B. King has entered hospice at his home in Las Vegas. Sad that it look's like we'll be losing another legend in the not to distant future. Long live the King.

And, John, I couldn't remember the WLS call letters but I too have spent a many late hour with my radio tucked under my pillow since I was supposed to be asleep. Concerning the Purple People Eater, it was always fun to hear the many "Gimmicks" that D.J.s used to attract listeners. Alan Freed, Wolfman and others were the tops in that field. I also listened to a strong station from Oklahoma City but I can't remember the call letters. Fun stuff remembering the "daze" ain't it?

Funny story.....When WAKY came on the air for the first week they played nothing but Purple People Eater. They would announce something like Johnny Horton's Battle of New Orleans but play Purple People Eater. Over and over and over.

Talk about smart marketing. That was all people were talking about for days......

John
John that wasn't marketing, THAT was the "Payola Roll Blue's!:
