I am putting a 4 speed in my S10, I ran it in my circle track car for a few years and no longer need it. It is a 29 spline input shaft and I cant find a clutch bigger than 7.25" for this. Has anybody used one of these trannys? I will not be running a clutch this small on the street so i'm hpoing somebody builds a larger clutch for a 29 spline trans, if not I guess I will have to swap the 29 spline to 26, would obviously rather not but will do what it takes to get the truck ready for the summer.
I can't see running a 7.25 inch clutch would be very traffic friendly never mind a smaller one. I have the 7" Tilton now. Why would the reverse be bad, and these are based off a T10 I believe. I have a M21 but it needs rebuilt, maybe I will use that tranny
A lot of these transmissions are built for circletrack or drag cars...quite often they thin down the reverse gear for less weight. This is fine for racing because you only use reverse to get it out of the trailer and to jockey around in the pits. It is based on the T10. You can contact Bubba at G Force South if you want parts and service. Im not being mean...its Bubba, I think his real name is Mike though.
Its not your fault; but a lot of people think you can just stuff any manual trans in any car and it'll work. You REALLY need to figure out what ratios your customized racing trans has before you invest in using it, especially on a shoestring budget. If it was built for a bullring track and a 5.14:1 rear gear; its going to be an absolute bear to use it in a car with 3.42s in the back. Your M21 has a 2.20 1st gear and really needs a 3.73 - 4.10 rear axle to work effectively. You could tear open the M21 and swap the input and cluster for an M20 input and cluster...this would give you an M20 and you could use 3.23s to 3.73s or more in the rear end
I would find a clutch manufacturer near you and have one made that will be the cheapest option. I cannot tell you how many clutches I went through in the years I have been hotrodding, and I have never bought a specialty clutch in my life.
ok I should have thought of a thinned down reverse gear. Yes I shifted the car without using the clutch and it works real nice only used the clutch to get the car moving, raced with it for 2 seasons. I will look into what ratios are in the tranny, I've put this M21 in 3 different trucks with a range of year gears 3.08-4.10 all worked just fine.
The stock car was ran at 1/2 mile- 3/8 mile tracks using 5.20- 6.40 rear gear but not sure what ratios are in the Tex
