The pickup assembly or something in the other parts could disentegrate the rotor button and cause a miss or burn a plug wire. I read the article you sent on HEI dist. and noticed it mentioned to not go over .40 on plug gap. I have them gaped at .45 and they may be .46/.47 by now. Thanks for any help or recomendations on my situation.

do you have an inductive timing light?
did the 283 go in as an upgrade from the 265?

You can use a multi-meter or ohm meter to check spark plug wires. Hold a lead to each end of the wire, set the switch to ohms. If the wire is good the reading will be 0. The distributor that Skip White sells is made by ProComp. Do a search on this site on ProComp distributors. Their products are not very good quality. I have a 283ci in my 56 chev. and put in a small HEI distributor from Skip White,
It has been working fine for about 1500 miles, but developed a miss. I started looking around for something obvious and took out all plugs & cleaned them, then looked in dist. cap for carbon tracks, I noticed the button in dist cap was disentegrated. Skip White sent a new cap and rotor, but still have a miss. I have never had a rotor button disentegrate before. and I wonder if the button left carbon on magnetic assembly in dist. or somehow burnt out a plug wire or?
With these HEI plug wires, can a person just do a continuity check on them with these little volt/continuity testers or hows the best way to test them?
Any help welcomed. I dont know much about these HEI sestems. PS. these small base HEI dist. uses an external coil. Thanks
