Well I'm not sure as to what camshaft to install in my 1988 318 roller camshaft block.I have A edlebrock performer intake also edlebrock 600cfm carb use ing hypertech pistons w chrome rings.I also am using HEI distribitor .staying with stock exh manifolds w duel exh. What would be a good roller camshaft? I have 302 swirl port heads am doing light port&polish job on.I don't want a radical cam that I have to change springs rocker arms ect..Something with low rpm torque. Good mpg Any input helpful
Any 318 head before the magnums arent worth the work. You want power for a daily vehicle, not racing, right. If you trust me, Get a set of magnums for a 318. They have the larger valves and install beehive springs from a series 2 GM v6. They drop on. This combination with the original cam will give you a large power/ torque increase from a small cam. Even a stock roller. Similar to a vortec heads swap on a 350. Hit the yard before it really starts to snow. You could probably get the magnum heads and GM beehive springs for under 250, and just clean them up with new 2.2L umbrella valve seals.
Comp Cams 264HR-12 is an awesome cam for a 318.Also the 302 heads are good flowing pieces.I have used this cam in two pre magnum roller 360's and love em.
302's and 051's have the swirl and the closed chamber , but are not good performers. These are not going to perform any better at that level than 915/587/596/974 open type. The runners intake side are less than 130cc. Do you realize the potential of that small a runner? They flow 150cfm at .5 lift stock. A simple Magnum swap is a great way to maximize a mild build. Easy 30-50 hp over a lower wider torque band.
The oe magnums are 172cc and flow 210cfm , the chamber is 64cc so you will like to mill it.
I cant suggest any cam. Not without gear car weight stall,,,you get it.
I'm only giving advice about what I know to be facts.I know there are those of us who feel they must "Educate" us about every cc of flow and all the other E=Mc squared bull but I KNOW this combo will work.
