|1996thunderchicken||well anyone look at the thread like i said he used a 010 2 peice main seal block and used the oe roller block parts in it cost him very little money and the machine work was done by him not a machine shop so it can be done and work good|

I had to buy the cam (obviously), retrofit lifters with the tie bar (expensive.. like $400 bucks shipped), and a cam button for the front of the cam so it doesn't walk forward. Note that a special timing cover is usually required, at least mine is. You can probably rig a normal one to work.
No machine work required.

Starting with the factory roller cam age in 86 up through 95 there is a mixed bag of engines that have no provisions for a roller, some have the casting modifications but no machining and others are completely provisioned for a roller cam even though they may have a flat tappet cam and lifter set installed these are exclusivly found in trucks. Some of these can be identified by block casing numbers, I offer some data which I'm sure is not complete:
1986 through 1995:
For 350 flat tappet blocks without provisions for the OEM roller look for casting number 10054727, 14079287, 14088548, and 14101148. Be careful of 14101148 as there is a roller block 14011148.
350 blocks that are roller provisioned, even if currently using a flat tappet cam look for 10243880, 14011148, 14088526, and 14093638 all of which can be 2 or 4 bolt blocks. The 880 carries across the 1995/1996 divide being used as a flat tappet cam, swirlport engine in 1995 becoming the L31, Vortec with roller cam in 1996 up thru 2002 production. It is still found in crate engines.
Starting with 1996 production all SBC Gen I blocks are roller provisioned and come with a roller cam which includes 10243880 .
The roller provisioned engines with a flat tappet cam can be changed to run the factory or aftermarket OEM style roller cam with the purchase of the spider, dog bones, thrust plate, and fasteners this can be had as a kit with or without the lifters.

|1996thunderchicken||Dude done and had video of it running sounds good with no problems he used 2.2 4 cylinder roller lifters and the factory spider tray and factory lifter holder aka dog bones he revved it past 6000 not one problem but make sure you got a steady hand|

For retrofit lifters with tie bars you dont need any machine work for normal sized cams. These are very expensive.
For useing oe rollers in older block its not a great way of doing things. I know it works but didnt think it was a good idea. I had both blocks setting next to each other did seems like it would work without a little risk. Oe is alot cheaper but only really good idea if the block alreay has the bosses and thinner walls cast. Drilling the main oil galley doesnt seem like a good idea.

|1Gary||Wouldn't ya be way better off just finding a truck 96 to 2000 donor either in a donor vehicle or from a pick and pull??. They aren't that much money and there are tens of thousands of them out there.|

An issue you will have to deal with is keeping the camshaft from walking forward when you switch to a roller cam. While adding a thrust button in the camshaft sprocket will do this you may want to use a timing chain that is machined for and comes with a roller thrust bearing. This bearing goes between the sprocket and block. In years past the block had to be machined for this but this is available as a bolt in set up now days. The thrust button is still used in this set up.
The reason this must be done is that a flat tappet cam pulls the cam rearward slightly due to the taper on the nose of the cam lobes. The same thing that makes the lifters spin. The roller cam does no have this feature.

Block Machining For Roller Cam - SBC
What specific machine work needs to be done on a SBC to install a roller cam? I don't want a retro fit kit. Thanks
