what is this FORD rear end called?

we installed this ford car 9" rear when we built my 27 rod.
the fill plug was added by someone in this rears past.
what is this rear end called?

I tend to agree that it's a 9". The 9-3/8" 3rd. member has (at least the ones I have seen) a downward curve to the topmost horizontal cast-in reinforcement rib. I once pulled one of these out of a hearse we had in our 'yard thinking it was a 9", spent the best part of a day digging a spider hole to work down under the damned thing (I was like 12 at the time). Finally got it out and hauled up to the shop. My Dad just shook his head.

The housing has two different ends on it: one earlier, one later.

It's a 9 inch, not the 9 3/8. I've got several of the 9 3/8 chunks and cobalt is right about the top rib turning down at the end. That is either the WAR or WAB case, which are the weakest of all the 9 inch cases. The '57 to '64 9 inch rear ends were not as strong as the '65 and later rear ends. The housings got stronger in '65 and the later cases had more material around the pinion pilot bearing.
