This is a good point, Mark. Though I was first to reply, I kind of backed out of the discussion until now to see where everyone stands. If you don't mind though, I would like to play the devil's advocate in a sense and say that if someone decides to pass by Bogie's post because of his low post count, they deserve the bad information they may decide to take instead of his. That guy is like the Judge Dredd of tech answers... He is the law. lol.

As far as Moe's suggestion, I think a helpful and not helpful button would be great on many websites, but perhaps not this one, only because you have just as many members weighing in an opinion of the value of a post that may not have the "qualifications" to do so. I'm not going to slight him though, it's a good alternative to the thanks button in a lot of situations.

I agree with Dinger that Ponch is a great mod and that although I'll probably still abuse the thanks button from time to time, it's a solid idea and I think it will help more than it may harm by a wide margin. Thanks Harry!

lt1silverhawk @123pugsy: Thank you for the thanks!

@Cobalt: You're welcome.

@Dinger: Well, thank you for thinking about thanking me!

dinger This was discussed briefly in the Mods forum. It is an easy way to say thanks to a poster for taking the time to contribute an answer or comment to a post without having to open a post just to do so. Just adding some politeness (is that a word?) to the forum.

We have a lot of regular members here that need a pat on the back occasionally for contributing on the tec stuff, although It doesn't have to be tech talk. Post counts help a little in some ways, but I think if a member sticks around for awhile, he can seperate the B.S, from the truth. There's been a bazillion posts on rust removal, a few membes butted heads. There's more than one way to skin a cat. There are plenty of helpful people here and that makes this site a great site.

Ponch is, IMO, our best Mod. He's come up with some great ideas and is always fair. We discuss things in the Mods forum, he's always kept an open mind. Running 2 websites of his own has given him some insight.

And if I weren't going to work this morning, I would go back and thank everyone for contributing to this thread. A good discussion.

Custom10 FYI Guys

I went in today an was able to "remove my thanks" from cobalt (experimental reasons only) in the post that I made the other day, then immediatley add it back. So apparently just because you have been thanked does not mean you will retain such thanks.

I think that is going too far, if thanks are given then under what circumstances should they be revoked? does the one thanked get notification that his thanks has been revoked? good greif I hope not, if that is the case we might as well all be sitting under hair dryers and reading cosmo.

FWIW I think the thanks in the lounge should not count on ones total.

Thanks!

cobalt327 For me, I'm satisfied that it was meant just to be an easy way to acknowledge someone for something. Not to show status, or reliability, or trustworthiness, or to help guide new members.

Case closed.

NEW INTERIORS See right here is the big deal... I guess..

I now have 11 to my count.. And didn't help anyone.. And if we go count the rest around here.. We will see the same thing...

I'm just saying.. Get to know someone if you need to know if he knows what he's talking about or not... Just becames someone can wear alot of metals,,Doesn't mean he is trustworthy... (I think we had a thread about someone like that... Fooled a lot of people..)

Don't judge me by how many stars I wear on my sleeve.. Judge me by reading what I post and do.. The ones coming here for help, Would have to take the time to look up all your thank yous,, So why can't that guy also look up what you post as well... Would take the same time to do both...

The only big deal with me is... It's NOT the best way to earn a key board reputation...

I think the way it was SET OUT to work isn't the way SOME want it to work..

If you really want people to NOTICE you.. Do a little work for it...

It's Kinda like RESPECT..

We don't need to wave a big flag look at me !!!!!

The point you make (I don't know if it's pro or a con) would seem to point out a flaw w/the system- IF that system is to help new members find "reliable" info. Now, one more shot at dispelling the notion of somehow this thread is a big deal:

Just because there's give and take between members, and that some like something and others not so much, this conversation doesn't- to my way of thinking- rise to a level even approaching a 'big deal'.

Fact- There have been good points made, both for and against using a tally system like this. And the results are very evenly split. Even so, there has been not one word typed in anger, no name calling, no disparaging remarks, no threats of banishment or even so much as a gentle reprimand from a moderator, and it is in fact one of the more civil threads among members having different opinions that I’ve seen in quite some time.

BTW, you DO realize that you have more posts to this thread than anyone, me included, right?

Yet another good point. Thanks.

And I'd just like to add that this isn't personal. Until poncho said he added it, this wasn't known, nor does it matter if JC hisself added it.

lt1silverhawk I would like to apologize. I got carried away when typing and started suggesting alternatives, clearly going way off topic.

Good point and of course the regulars are the ones jumping in here. My personal opinion would be the newbies are going to read what interests them, take the advice that sounds correct to them and never think twice about whether the person that is giving the advice has ever been thanked.

I for one like the forum and have no desire to criticize it or the moderators. You really can not make everyone happy but by and large I think the vast majority of us are. That is a pretty good track record.

If you look at the poll results, more like it totally or in part than don't, so I don't know why you're confused.
