Any tips for painting when its cold?I'm gonna re shoot my truck my building is 24x36 its a pole building has been seemed with osb&the inside has 1&1/2" thick foam board Ill be in the first half the roof isn't that high in the first half...the building is like a shed roof style what some may call a lean too or pitched.Ill be running my big torpedo heater on the other end facing away from where Ill be.Its well ventilated the temp outside will be around 50,
I know I need to have the metal on the truck warm any other things I should know? Also I just painted this truck this summer with a smaller compressor but got a lot of spots that looked like real shiny orange peel I had a guy who use to paint back in the 80s look@ it&he said I went on too thick since then I've practiced so hopefully Ill get this right.Ill shoot some test panels first. But what works better for you going fast or going slow?when I go fast I get crap results but when I go slow I get that nice smooth wet look but runs its a ss dark grey non metallic also if I want can I shoot clear over this?thanks

Ok so heres where we are..that restorstion shop paint from tcp global is the problem!I thought i had got it to lay how it should but when I sprayed today it had tons of orange peel..well I had some old 4th dimemsion bc I shot&it is laying on perfrct&it cures in a few seconds..so What Im painting is a full size ext cab truck&I have a little under half a gallon so what Im gonna do is try to use whats left in it as the bottom half of the truck is painted a diffrent color&I was going for 2 tone so Im gonna try to shoot the top half with this paint &if I run out Ill just paint the bumpers to match bumpers..So I have a few questions, first they quit making this paint..is there anyway somebody can mix it up?Its a silver from a chevelle..also its a bc/cc that dosnt use a hardner just reducer its also a metallic..can I skip the clear?I have a gallon of clear but it looks good without it.Thanks..oh &why would the single stage have orange peel but the bc dosnt?

#1 base coat is so much thinner than Single Stage, that's why you don't have orange peel...(your gun can break down or atomize thinner paint and can't atomize thicker paint).
#2 Is the 1/2 gallon of base coat reduced or un-reduced? If you have 2 quarts un-reduced that will make 1 full gallon reduced, 2 quarts reduced should be enough for the bottom.
#3 All base coats must be cleared, all your UV (Ultra Violet) protection is in your clear coat, the base alone doesn't have any protection qualities at all. It will not protect against rust, weather and sunlight will chaulk out the metallic's as well as un-cleared base coat has no shine.
#4 Any automotive paint supplier should be able to make that color for you, if it's from a Chevelle, they need to go to their old GM chip book and you can pick a color.

Just a side note, in your last post you mentioned that you used a quart of reducer to clean your gun...talk to your paint supplier, you can buy a 5 gallon pail of gun wash for under $50.00, reducer is to expensive and doesn't clean your gun as good as gun wash.

Ok so I was just told is base doesn't peel usually but clear will. so am I going to get peel in the clear. because even if I do 6 coat of clear what is from the first coat to the 6 all of it has orange peel the net is pointless to wet sand right? also I have a buffer but I have no clue how to cut and buff

Clear Coat is a thicker product and chances are it will peel as well...Like I mentioned earlier...Why not wait until Christmas when you get your Devilbus gun...If that's a problem, then the orange peel that won't be fixed until you get proper equipment...If you where closer I'd let you borrow one of my guns but your in MO and I'm in Canada...You mentioned you had a friend that had a gun...could you borrow his?

Cutting and buffing an extended cab...the clear has to cure thoroughly before you polish and with the temperature you'd in all probability be there till Christmas anyway.

I am seriously trying to help, but, everything seems to come back to equipment.

Ok so Im gonna end up with orange peel then when I shoot the clear..hmm could it be that Im under or over reducing? The single stage? It dosnt call for reducer but its thick...The tech sheet dosnt say nothing about reducing excepct for that its optional..so Ive beedln reducing@1:4 What should I try?

I think all the advice 69widetrack has given you is right on. It definitely sounds like the viscosity of your paint is way to thick. You do not mention whether or not you have sufficiently reduced this paint. If it is not properly reduced you can use the best equipment money can buy and it is still not going to flow out. You are going to end up with the orange peel or dry overspray.

Reduce whatever product your spraying if your getting orange peel. If the single stage is giving you orange peel, reduce it by 10 to 15%...If the clear is giving you orange peel reduce it by about 10%...If your still getting orange peel, try another 5% for either clear or single stage...reduce it until your not getting orange peel anymore.

You ever seen the color of money when vincent is kicking gradys but @the masters@9 ball&he says to grady what he said to him earlier...its like a nightmare isnt it?He then replies yeah *****..well I feel like grady anyways..well I shot the clear over the jams of a parts car that is black&there was minor peel..you couldnt really tell it was there so it was almost like factory peel Id say&I can live with that.To just be done.I also found a guy with a paint botth for 800.00&a satajet blue for a little extra so Im done with single stage Im swearing it off because everytime I use it it ends up a mess. Now I have to sand it down for a 4th time Im not happy..I also tryd reducing the ss till it was like water..same problem.

Will do 69 I have a gallon of finish line clear the activator seems to of dissapeard but I had some from anothet bc&it seems to of hardend it up..hope I dont regreat this
also out of primer so gonna try for a hail mary while sanding&if I hit metal I have just enough to hit a few spots..but Im pretty good@sanding.

Well with 4 paint jobs on the truck I don't think I'd worry about hitting metal. I know your frustrated and I don't blame you one bit, but, there's always a bright side...You found out that you where not the problem...You found out that you don't like single stage...(especially thick single stage)...You got a new paint gun (that's always a good day when you get a new paint gun)...and you found out that you can lay clear down with just the right amount of orange peel to match the 2013 GM's just coming off the assembly line. All in all, not a bad day...and you found a paint booth for $800...it just keeps getting better and better.

Good luck my friend and I sincerely wish you all the luck in the world.

Hey there 69 pm sent..well Im gonna try to reduce the clear a bit more to get out the last of the orange peel so we shall see how that works. Also can too much air cause orange peel?Ive tryd to go from wide open fluid till all the way in..I know the more you go in the smaller the droplets get but it seems like it dosnt wanna spray if it gets to small

#111 ·
To much air pressure can indirectly cause orange peel or the look of orange peel. When I say the look of orange peel it's because with more pressure you get more over spray, this over spray, because of the increased pressure is curing as it lands on the panel your painting giving you little bumps that you cover with a wet coat of clear...If you've ever felt dried over spray, would you paint over top, no, it's not smooth enough.

Hope this explains your question

Hey fellas just sent this in a email so just copied Yae!So I went back down to the shop I just couldnt get this op off my mind so I cleaned all my guns&tryd diff settings on all..nada still op..for some reason my regulator@the gun hasnt been letting me bump up the air past 60 but some of the hf guns call up to 70 so I took the regulator off with 100@tank&pulled the trigger instantly heard a diffrent hiss...sounded stronger&I had no panels but had some un prepd doors for my drag project shot..smooth everything went smooth besides being dirty!I gess said regulator was broke.I didnt think they could fail,it looked gumd up with paint.

The regulator could be the culprit...it's one of those situations where, the internet being a wonderful source of information but not the do all end all, being there and being able to hear what is happening could have solved a situation much sooner.

I sincerely hope that a $30.00 regulator solves your problems with painting your truck.

Keep us informed.
