cobalt327 IMHO more info is better than less, any way you look at it! Clarifying the engine to bellhouse bolt pattern is the same helps, too.

The 292 fly wheel bolt holes are the wrong size ! The 292 isn't like other Chevy sixes, most of them used 1/2" flywheel bolts (instead of 7/16") and three dowels. As for what small block it depends on weather it internally balanced or external even if its adaptable. The starter must also match the diameter of the fly wheel.

Yes,the 292 has the same bell housing bolt pattern as all later Chevy v8s,small & big blocks.

It's been awhile, but IIRC the cast crank 292 flywheel uses 1/2" bolts to hold it onto the crank. So if you were to use a V8 flywheel, you'd need to drill it out for the 1/2" fasteners. I think- pls. double check this.

The tranny bolt pattern has to be the same as whatever bellhousing you use. There are at least two bearing retainer hole sizes (again, IIRC), so see what hole size and pattern that your tranny needs and use the appropriate bellhouse to match it. There are bellhousings that will fit but would be too small for the large truck flywheel, too. So the diameter of the flywheel also matters.

Some info on Chevy bellhousings can be seen here.
