v6 mod

I ean a v6 nodfied in a cicle track car here in the northwest. Was great fun demon carb and a delta hot cam and it made right at 300 ponys. Took it out on the street back roads actually and my wive could keep up to about 125 mph. Before I ran off from her..
was a fhn set up and I still gave the motir out back for another project.

BuzzLOL .. LOL! Only took 5 pages of arguing, but you guys finally more or less got to Step #1: get the truck, take it out on a closed top end course, and see what it'll do... then you know exactly what it's lacking... make a good guesstimate of what it would take to reach around 128 MPH from there... can that be done with home-modded stock or newer Vortec V6 parts... or would it take out-of-budget unobtanium parts? Or, dare I say it, a budget V8? Headers plus fixing the crappy quench and compression ratio and casting irregularities on these engines can go a long way toward obtaining the RW power these V6 and V8 engines of that era should have made from the factory... once that's fixed, then they are able to take advantage of a cam bump up as well, if needed... is that enough?

.. Chad/OP mentioned 128 MPH goal... also mentioned at least over 115 MPH... apparently he's using top speed as a 'poorman's dyno'... and that works... if it makes his goal, it's gonna rock pretty good 0 - 70 against his friends... nitrous costs around $60/minute to operate, so kinda limits a lot of fun... and, of course, takes even more nitrous to move a truck very far... and you won't get very far in a boat on nitrous ( I boat on 250 mile long x 55 mile wide Lake Erie )... if some braggart says his S-10 has 500Hp and it actually peters out at 97 MPH on the 'top speed dyno', well, that's that... the cat's out of the bag on him...

.. Chad said right off his friends have trucks, so no need to compare his truck to cars of any sort...

.. Somebody mentioned it costs $5,000 to get 350HP out of a Chevy 350... reminded me of this $1,000 410+HP 440lb.-ft. torque build (OK, prolly a slightly happy dyno, but still...):

.. Anyway, this brings us to plans. The object of Chad's first posting. What RPM did the truck max speed at stock? In what tranny gear? What's the rear gear (3.73) and tire size? To get to 128 MPH you need gearing that allows the engine to reach peak HP RPM at, say, about 126 MPH so it can get up their quicker... then it'll still rev a bit more with power for that last couple MPH... What RPM is the newly modified engine likely to HP peak at? (Lots of the guys here can give you a pretty close estimate!) Does the computer need an RPM limit removed or raised in it's software? From there, we plug all the info into the online calculator and check the resulting spreadsheet to see if something needs to be changed (tire size, rear gear):

.. ( 700-R4 tranny gears can be entered automatically by selecting " F-Body A-4 " from the dropdown menu at the top, you'll have to correct rear gear ratio if one pops up, I usually enter 6500 RPMs redline for a street vehicle)

1Gary Yeah through the fender well for sure.The recommendation is to drop off the steering shaft and I don't wanta go through all that.I was told Snap-on sold a special socket,but when I asked him about that,he didn't know what I was talking about.

vinniekq2 I dont change them at all.I have 2 young mechanics with shiny tools that like to do that...lol

I change all of them through the fender wells, take the tires off and its a MUCH quicker and easier job.

i change that one through from the fender well.

1Gary I own a shop truck 4.3 1999 Sonoma 5 speed.I know to change plugs on that is a real bear on number three plug by the steering shaft.I just can't imagine what it would be like on your turbo set-up.BTW-very,very,nice work on that mod.Very impressive.

his location says florida. maybe he wants to be able to run with the flow of traffic on I-95?

AutoGear I had a friend in high school with an S10 (didn't most of us have one of those friends in high school if we're under 40?). We tried Marine heads, Marine intakes, ported heads. We got started on an M90 conversion, scrapped that for a turbo and scrapped that after getting half the front end torn off to get the piping mocked up. Rich then tried his hand at porting the heads, and after 40hrs and 2 sets of heads...was no better off. Building a 4.3 to run 128mph can be done; but if you don't want to run the risk of being let down in terms of eating your budget, or marginal performance you may want to think twice.

Heres what I know. When I was your age, I had the money to do something once. So don't take what these guys are saying as a slam, its not. We want successful hotrodders. Also, the first thing you'll do after running 128mph is want to run 135. This is one of those laws of hot rodding.

Now after giving no hard information, heres some technical info.

You could put a stock LT1 in there and it would be cooler and more legal than a carb V8. It'd also have more room to grow than your maxed out 6'er. You can find a good running LT1 for less than a grand. You'll probably have to build a swap harness, but its not impossible, and there are several good how-to's on youtube for these kinds of things.
You'll also need to look at your trucks fuel requirements for this kind of power, I bet due to its age, it's marginal at best by now.
Personal experience; Im a member of the 3rd Gen camaro/firebird forums. There are a ton of guys over there who play with the 6 bangers and have a wealth of info. Most of em that dump money into them, come up short and kill the resale value of their daily driver. The smartest ones build a 2nd powerplant, and swap it in over a week in order to minimize down time. And then sell the car and buy a V8 one


You really want to do it? 3.23 gears and a bucket of nitrous oxide. This may or may not be legal in your area, and you'll probably run the TBI lean and melt it down. FYI a full bottle of nawss in your car is not legal in most areas, armed or not. As a young guy, they'll be itching to throw the book at you. Most of us here have 1st hand experience in that.

GMCTRUCKS If your going to race please take it to the track it's not worth you dying or killing someone and ending up in jail if you street race.

My brother had a S-10 with a LS engine in it he would race it at the track it was a blast. Be safe buddy I see your young ok I care about you well I care for all.
