painted jester Hows your cam look, If its not pitted and metal isn't rolling on the lobes and the old lifters look good on the bottoms not bowled or pitted you can run new lifters on it, but you must brake them in just like a new cam break in! Dealers and racers and hotrodders have done that for many many years! If it was the case that you cant run new lifters on an old cam, dealers would change cam and lifters every time a lifter was replaced because it wouldn't pump up and made noise! If the cam lobes are wore they will probably wear out the cam and lifters pretty quick!!!!


You Don't need to take the chance. flat tappet cam kits are cheep!

disassebled sbc help

Check the sides of the rods and caps, look for numbers on each rod and cap. This tells what cylinder the piston was in. Replace the camshaft with a cam and lifter kit from Summit Racing. These are great cams for the price. Summit Racing Street & Strip® Cam Kits SUM-K00052 - SummitRacing.com

BOBCRMAN@aol.com New lifters on a used cam is inviting disaster these days. Or even changing cam/lifters to a different block. I have a customer that installed a slightly used cam and lifters (less than 1000 miles). From his old engine. Into a new engine for his street only ElCamino.

Lifters were marked to the lobe and assembled with break in lube and zinc supplement in the oil. Valve springs set at 95 lb. on the seat. Roller rockers.

The engine wiped all but one lobe off the cam in two weeks time. .

s-10again! well then that is good news becasue the rod caps and nuts apear to have been reassebled on disassembly, in the right order. that is quite a load off. how about lifters? would new lifters on the old cam be in order or would i need to start with a fresh cam set? otherwise this is just a freshen up job and the engine will go to a good home. sooner than later.

Actually what's important about rods is that the cap and shank match. The cylinder they came from is not important as long as the piston and the rod have the correct orientation. All the pistons have a notch or arrow on top this needs to point to the front of the block in all cases. The rods have a chamfer on the bearing end one side is larger than the other, the larger chamfer always faces the cheek side of the rod throw, so on any throw there will be a forward facing large chamfer with a piston notch both faceing forward, there will also be a rod with the large chamfer facing to the rear of the engine with the attached piston's notch facing to the front of the engine.

If they seperated the rod caps from the rod shanks such that you don't know what goes with what you're more than less got a job to do. Now you've got to figure the match of cap for each shank. This will be visual and slow going you're looking for when the bearing indents are aligned on the same side that the cap and shank bearing diameter meets smoothly and the outside thrust surfaces from and rear of the rod also meet smoothly and the bolt holes and bolts align. Not impossible to do just a PIA to do.
