496CHEVY3100 You can also look at rear of engine ,below distrubitor where bellhousing meets block it has a clock to tell what time built am/pm also code for monday -sunday.date built year mo day then and casting # you will not buy one built on monday morning .hangover. or friday night .wanting to go home, LOL ,but date is not as important look at front of engine or rear of block , look for core shift ,casting seam should be as close to center af cam plug as possible.

Viban My chevy 350 had a date engraved along where the exhaust gasket sits it's a '98 chevy and the date said 10/16/97 so I can only assume that it was the casting date. I don't know if that works or not though.

The pad is right where the head and block meet. Your pad will be shorter, side-to-side, than the one shown below. It is sometimes hidden by the alternator or fuel line, etc.

Valkyrie5.7 Make sure you know your engines and/or do your research before you purchase. I know to most of us it seems common sense, but not every block that came out of a chevy with "5.0" cast into the side is a chevy engine. The 307 olds came the same way and was offered in a few chevy vehicles. I just went to check out a supposed "403" a couple months back and it was a 307 with a torker intake and some shiny bolt-ons. Guy swore up and down that it was a 403 and that it came out of a trans am until I pointed out the "5.0" casting in the side. He apologized for the misinformation (he was a chevy builder, they can't be expected to know everything ) and we went our separate ways.

Here are details of what to look for (casting date and suffix code) and where to look.

The date code if it's there, will be near where the casting code is at, or where you saw the 5.0L gas cast into the block. The date code will be a letter and numbers, like "C 12 8" or something like that.

68NovaSS If the block hasn't been decked, shaving them off, look on the motor pad in front of the passenger side head for stamped numbers, bring them here or look online for the codes. Here's one of many
