A flex fan takes away power. When the blades break watch out they will destroy everything in their path, waterpump, rad, hood, etc..

Chevyshome yes you have a point there........I was hoping not to have a problem with the bearing in the pump at all but.....I guess that is a chance I will have to take unfortunately......

sunsetdart You would be better off getting rid of the clutch fan and just getting a good pitched blade fan. The clutch fan adds alot more weight and the newer pitched blade fans have stainless blade with a steel hub and pull much more air at lower speeds and even more at highway speeds plus reduced weight on the pump hub.

cobalt327 For one thing, using a 2" spacer and >2" long 1/4" bolts to mount the clutch/fan assembly will be stressing 1/4" fasteners a lot. Using a spacer that allows for shorter fasteners would be worth considering for that alone.

In the image below, you'd mount the spacer to the w/p hub w/one set of short fasteners, then mount the clutch/fan to the spacer using another set of fasteners. There will still be more stress on the w/p bearings, but all in all it's a better set up than a spacer using just four long 1/4" bolts.

Chevyshome that sounds kewl enough alright..........but how will it work and or connect, to a 19 " clutch fan assembly......and just for the record.......I have a new rad core......and it only heats up over 180 degrees when the motor has been idling for a certain period of time ( the fan is not drawing completely through the rad itself in this case ).....and once again my fan is right now......approximately 5 1/2 " from the rad ......and why would an Allstar Spacer be any different than the 2 " Derale spacer that I was considering using...... also the only universal fan shroud I can find is 13 " in height.......therefore only covering a portion of the rad that the 19" fan draws through the rad..... thanks very much for your comments......I do appreciate it..........

sunsetdart Go to Jegs and check out the Allstarr fan spacers. I recently got one for my car. They attach to the pump separately with countersunk allen head bolts . That allows you to attach the fan or remove it without taking off the spacer.

cobalt327 In the first post you mention "hopefully alleviate a potential cooling problem". I wouldn't arbitrarily do anything until I knew for sure there was a need.

Chevyshome ........I went through a bunch of my old spare parts in a box I have and........I came across a 2 " aluminum spacer with a 5/8 pilot........I am thinking that this will take care of the situation and bring the fan to approximately 2 1/2 " away from the rad.........

Chevyshome yes.......I am gonna go with a Universal Shroud.......which is 5 1/2 inches thick......along with a 19 in. clutch fan..........and hopefully all should be well.........!

A good electric fan set-up still has a shoud. The only way to utilize all the surface of a radiator is to use a shroud, be it an electric fan or a fan driven via the engine. The shroud pulls air across the entire radiator.

If you simply mount electric fans right onto the radiator, with no shroud, only the area of the radiator adjacent to the fan will benefit from the cooling effect of the fans.

Chevyshome yes..........depending on how close your fan is to the rad........Mine is 5 inches away......I see where Summit and Jegs have Universal shrouds in stock........!

Mechanical?? I thought you had a clutch fan? What do you mean by staying mechanical? You would keep the clutch fan if you went with a spacer under the clutch fan's base.
