So I got a 305 with 416 heads for cheap (yes I know a 305, it's a mud truck so it's not getting a lot if $$ in it). With it I got a new cam, lifters, stock rockers, timing chain and flex plate and moroso valve covers

I have no idea if the heads have any work done but I don't believe so. This is the came he gave me, but I'm thinking it may be too much lift

Can I run this cam? I'll run a 2500 converter with 4.10's.

Also I may have more info on it later, not sure if it has flat tops. About to do a leakdown test after church.

For stock 416's that's a little big. I'm sure F'bird will get on here and do his sermon on the porting the 416's mount, and if you have the time to do it it may not be a bad idea since it's basically free (just time consuming).

BUT for stock heads you may wan to step down to the 274h06 or equivalent cam, you can buy that cam for about $70 too. For either cam getting a set of headers and free flowing exhaust is a must.

Brandon, let's do some math.

A. 2500 engine rpm's with a 4.10 gear and 33" tire will produce 60 mph vehicle speed.
B. 2500 engine rpm's with a 3.43 gear and 28" tire will produce 60 mph vehicle speed.

From this, hopefully you can see that you will need more gear, particularly with a small displacement motor like the 305. I don't think anyone would recommend a Crane 10008 cam to you if you had a 3.43 gear and 28 inch tire. They would tell you to get more gear. Actually, with what you have now, a stock cam or just over stock would work best in my opinion.

Thanks guys for the feedback, I guess I'm going a different route. I had a feeling that's too much cam.

How about this little guy?

I was after something with a little loap, even if it hurt low end torque. Like the price tag on that cam. Unless someone could recommend something else. I'm getting a new torque converter anyways too so maybe something with a lower stall.

is this a competitive mudding truck, or a toy mudding truck? If its just a toy then don't worry about every last hp, I've gone mudding with little 4 bangers, and a lot of other people have to. Actually, the most important part of building for mud is DURABILITY. Don't max out your compression ratio and run extra cooling for when it packs full of mud.

hitting old forrestry roads is a LOT different than competitive mud bogs, and I'm not sure which you're referring to.

Good point to bring up, this is strictly a toy, nothing show or competition, we have a local mud hole and drag strip, and I would rather build a drag s10 or nova, but all my buddies are into trucks right now, so go fast toy comes later in life.

It will be for toying in the local mud hole, and also has to get me through the woods, the kind with no people for tens of miles and no cell service. That's why I'm thinking that 1002 might be better choice? I can run that with the press in studs and stock springs right?
