Using TDC will work most times, unless the cam is way big or it has very long clearance ramps, like the Duntov 30-30 cam.
If TDC is going to be used, at least verify that the lifters are not on the clearance ramps by setting them at TDC then check using the EO/IC method. If there's no change in the lash, you're good to go.

Aside from getting the valve lash correct, the procedure per cylinder is crucial. I have tried every procedure, but find the best and easiest for myself was an individual firing order adjustment rotating the crank, starting at TDC and proceeding to the next firing cylinder. Like I said, I start at TDC on the crank and adjust No.1 firing cylinder valves ( both intake and exhaust ) to specs. I then turn the crank 1/4 turn in direction of firing rotation and adjust the valves for the No. 2 firing cylinder. Continue this through the cylinders until you are back at TDC and you are good to go. This works for all 4,6,8 cylinders and I find keeps things a little simpler. Good luck.

One issue you'll need is to determine valve lash on your engine's solid lifter setup. If you were using hydraulics the lash are all the same, but solids require different lash from manufacturer's specs. The old Duntov 30-30 was set as the name indicates, .030" lash intake/exhaust.
Some mfg. spec similar clearances, but some spec less. Most don't spec more than .030" clearance. Most modern Comp Cams are .022" lash. You could get somewhere around that lash and hope it's close enough.

try finding a manual that tell u what lifter is at bdc at TDC on the balancer then u adj about 1/2 the lifters then turn the crank one full turn and do the remaining lifters.. u will need to know the cold feeler gage setting. tighten the rocker down till u have a snug fit when pulling it out. just don't over tighten the rocker, that will equal a bent push rod. i know a motors manual gives u this info.. keep in mind when u fire it up it will click and always have a small clicking. there solid not hyd..

I was going to try to explain it, but realized it would probably take me two or three pages and I'm sure someone can be a lot more informative in a much shorter post LOL. A little more info may be helpful to them though. Have you ever adjusted valves on a solid lift cam? Or a Chevrolet based engine?|
