Wezz Stil have a question . Stock my block had a roller cam but the edelbrock and cranecam have both flatt tapped ..so what d i need to do going to flat tap or hold the roller valve lifters in

Wezz Ok thanks . And no i dont expect 370 hp haha. Thats a realy nice engine . I keep it with that cranecam or edelbrock .. Not sure wich one its gonna be. And keep the 187 heads. I wil take the exhaustports nice with the gasket. And.thats it but thank you all

Take a look at this Popular Hotrodding 305 engine build before you start buying parts. If you're dead set on keeping it a 305, then as mentioned the right cam and heads will be needed to get more out of it.
At the very least you should consider having a machinist upsize the valves and springs if you go much over stock with a cam.

Torque is what you feel in the seat of your pants. This is why stroker engines are so popular now.I built a stroker for the torque and was very happy with the results.Back in my youth we build 283s for high RPM. We had 3 speed transmissions and the race was won or lost in first gear. Now adays if you have a 4 speed people think you are behind the times. Using 5 speed transmissions and torquey engines and you feel like you are driving a race car and still get daily use with the over drive. Low RPM engines last a long time

1. There are many wierd things on this planet, including some of the people on this site. Bottom line, ALWAYS use the valve springs recommended by the cam grinder for that particular grind.

2. Porting the exhaust valve? Well, you don't port the exhaust valve. You port the exhaust port. That's why it's called porting and not valving.
You'll notice that the 114112 cam has different duration and different lift from the intake valve to the exhaust valve. This additional lift and duration on the exhaust side seems to help some on heads that don't flow as well on the exhaust side as they do on the intake side (true of most production heads).

You have the option of grinding on the heads any way you want to, they're YOUR heads.

Wezz Ok. I have still 2 questions . On the summit website they recomend. Also valve springs. By the crane cam .. Bij the edelbrock they did not its a bit wierd .. Dnt you think so . And question 2 has porting the exhaust valve any sense

Back up and read post 29 again. I added some stuff after you posted. Pay particular attention to the Crane 114112.

Your question about hp cannot be answered intelligently. There are too many variables. You might just as well ask "how long is a piece of string?"
Once you get everything together, take the van to a facility that has a rear wheel dynomometer. Multiply the rear wheel hp that you get by 1.25 to get close to flywheel hp.

One last thing, please stop harping on hp. Torque is what you want, not hp.

Here's the Crane cam....

Here's the Edelbrock I might use....
Edelbrock Performer-Plus Cam and Lifter Kits 3702 - SummitRacing.com
I like the Crane cam because of the 104 degree lobe separation angle, contributing to low end torque. The Edelbrock cam uses 112 and I don't care for that. It favors higher rpm's, something you will not see with your heads.

I might also use this cam....again,....104 degree lobe separation angle and a little more lift than the 114102 cam.

Here's Crane's description of the 114112 cam.....
Great for 305 and 350 engines in cars, light and intermediate trucks with optional gearing (or shorter tires). Good low and midrange torque and HP.

Generally speaking, most builds such as what you're contemplating will benefit from using THE VERY FIRST OFFERING ON THE LIST from the cam grinder, particularly with heads that are designed for low-rpm operation. COMBINATION, COMBINATION, COMBINATION.

Wezz so what cam wil you recomend to my stock setup ( only flowing the ports) rest is stock dont say not anny cam wil work there are people withe same engine as me and done it before with another cam im not looking for a high performance drag engie but just a little better than a stock 305

techinspector1 Any camshaft that you bolt into the motor will have an operating range of ~3,500 rpm's. It will allow the motor to make power from idle to 4,000 or from 2,000 to 5,500 or from 3,500 to 7,000 or whatever rpm range you wish to use. AGAIN, the heads you have are optimized for low-rpm operation and will not be compatible with a camshaft that wants to operate at a higher rpm range. I continually harp on "combination", "combination", "combination because you must use parts that complement each other. If you use a longer cam with those fosdick heads, you will kill off bottom end power by virtue of more cam timing. Any power that you may make on the top end as a result of more cam timing will be killed by the heads. There's no free lunch.
