I like the specs on this cam, Id use this grind with a wieand stealth intake and a 650 holley, a good set of 1 5/8 headers and 2 1/2 inch exhaust with flowmasters and it should sound real mean

Invstr396, A 300-36 Holley intake is a high rise/dual pane with a power range of idle-7200. It is the Holley version of an Edelbrock Performer RPM. http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLin...SM/300-36.html
I would like to try an 8004 Weiand. If I come across one, I probably will. It should work well. In a heavier car.......Probably better than my 300-36.
As far as the 151 cam goes........By todays standards, it's old school at best. It is a single pattern cam with 222* duration @ .050" on both intake and exhaust. It's also ground with slow ramps as the factory does to increase durability. I don't know for sure, but I would guess the duration would be in the 280+* range @ .006". I saw a dyno run years ago where the then new Crane HMV-272-2 kicked the old 151 to the curb from idle to red line. The HMV-272-2 was upgraded to the PowerMax H-272-2. The specs are: 272/284, 216/228, .454/.480, 112*lsa, power range 2000-5000. Nearly the same specs as the solid I run with the exception of the advertised duration. I wanted the short seat timing for the increased vacuum, off idle torque, and fuel mileage. I put 100 miles a day on the truck in the 1500-2000 rpm range. For some this wouldn't be an issue, but with todays fuel prices it is for me.
The Crane cam I listed above is just for reference. Every other cam company has one just like it. Pick your favorite. Comp even has small solid cams that are almost the same as My cam that came from Predator Cams. The Comp is ground with a 110*lsa. One could assume the Comp would make a little more peak power and torque in a narrower band than my cam. My cam with a 114*lsa would have a better idle, higher vacuum, and a wider/flatter power curve. The cam you choose is going to boil down to the exact combo you are running. Weight, trans, gear, intended use, etc.
I do know that if you get everything right, a 305 can be made to run well. I'm running 9.30's in the 1/8. Next years goal is to dip into the 8's and maintain my 21MPG. Dan

RE 305 cheopo buildup
This 305 buildup stuff is getting interesting guys, while 350 smallblocks are getting costlier the 305 is relegated to doorstop status and are practically give away stuff. I also have a free 305 that I am slapping together for a just in case situation and am wondering regarding ohio dans buildup Wouldn,t a dual plane like the 8004 wieand be better than the holley sinle plane?
Also I have a new 327/350 horsepower cam the chevy 151 model I was curious if that would mild out in a 305 if I set it up with a 4 degree advance to save some bottom end? opinions anyone?

Hey, that's a good idea Ohio-Dan to run a mild solid tappet cam on your little 305. You can get more power out of the smaller engine with a more aggressive profile than a hydraulic without sacrificing too much bottom end torque. I was wrestling with the idea of "warming over" my 305 in my 79 Camaro since I already have a stout 350 in my 78 Camaro. I guess the only drawbacks are noise and some extra maintenance but heck my slant six had solids in it and it went the last 100,00 miles of it's life without checking lash!
I think my 305 is going to get "recycled" with a solid cam but I doubt it will go 160,000 miles without even removing the valve covers before the next re-build like I got away with this time LOL.

I run a 300-36 Holley intake on the 305 in my S-10 with no complaints.
As far as cam choice goes, once you clear about 260* of advertised duration you are going to start loosing bottom end power. In the 218* @ .050" range you will start to out run the flow capabilities of the stock heads. Anymore duration and you lost bottom end without being able to regain it in the top.
I run a solid flat tappet cam that specs: 258/270, 219/229, .456/.479, 114*lsa This cam has a smooth idle, pulls 19" of vacuum at 600rpm, and gets 21 MPG with a 200-4R and 3.73 gears. It also pulls hard from idle-5500 rpm. Last trip to the track, the truck consistently ran 76mph in the 1/8 with a best of 76.72mph.
The cam DoubleVision chose is a good one if you are going with Summits cheap line. Power will be in the 1200-4600 range with a smooth idle.Vacuum will be just under 18 1/2" at idle. My fuel mileage was 20.
For reference, I also ran a Crane Blueprint series 300hp/327 cam. Power dropped like a rock at 4200. 19 1/4" vacuum and 21 mpg. Trap speed for the Crane was in the 70mph range. The Summit cam ran a best of 72.67mph in the 1/8. The Summit cam also had the slowest 60ft time by .04sec. Dan

I put a edelbrock performer intake and a 465 lift 224 duration . That 's the cam with a stock convertor. If you don't use that cam dont go over 470 lift . It's will have a little loppy Idle. . Go with 600 Double pumber . You can get that cam and lifter from summit racing. It's a summit brand for about 85$ . Make that 305 run good. 70 Nova.
Look a your cam bearing. If they look good .It will be ok But put that cam in slow and easy. You should have good oil pressure. but you need a stall a 1,900 would work fine for you . You can find them for under 200$ just look around.

|DoubleVision||the holley dual plane street dominator will work fine, as for big cam, that`s a no no in a stock engine, especially the small cubic inch 305. I`d recommend the 204/214 duration cam from summit and that`s as big as I`d go. it won`t have a lope, but it will give it more low end torque and better acceleration. if you go with a larger cam, sure it might sound fine at idle, but you`ll get your doors blown off by ricers.|

Cam and Intake Manifold for a Chevy 305?
Hi. I recently re-built a 305. i used stock size parts, and the stock heads. i was wondering if a Holley Street Dominator Intake would work good on my engine. also, i was also wondering if you guys know of a big cam that would work in my engine(preferably from summit racing). i love the sound of a big cam. lol. Thanks.
PS: i still have the stock stall converter in it.
