Should be able to hear it if you listen against the distributor body.

For God's sake, keep the screwdriver away from the moving parts! It'll go through your skull like a knife through hot butter. Much, much better to use a length of rubber fuel hose... or a mechanic stethoscope.

techinspector1 A cracked flexplate can sound like that. If not the flexplate, pull the valve covers and check for loose rockers that might indicate losing a lobe or three on the cam.

cobalt327 Might want to check that the distributor isn't bottoming on the oil pump push rod. More here.

Check for the rotor hitting the inside of the cap or the teeth on the distributor hitting the pick up coil assembly. This is right under the mechanical advance plate.

glhx i checked all the exhaust ports for harmonics and found nothing, it still has manifolds on it. it is way higher clicking than an exhaust leak....from what i can tell its closr to the rear of the engine...behind the carburetor. but listening internally i dont hear anything but smooth engine.

changing the oil did nothing. engine cleaner did nothing.

i used a tall screwdriver to hear harmonics all over both valve covers and all intake runners. Ive been able to pinpoint these before but cant find this one.

pretty sure its not a rod knocking.

ive checked all over the motor just to see if i can find it.
Check closely for an exhaust header leak...
