roger1 I just called Tanks, Inc and they don't have any plans for a tank for '78 to '87 El Caminos. But, they said they would put it on the list.

This is turning out to probably not be worth the effort for me to do right now. If I wait long enough, they will probably reproduce the FI sending unit. Or, some company might start making a custom tank. I could probably have Rock Valley custom make one but that would be very expensive and I can't justify that.

I guess I stick with an external pump for the time being. I do have a new Walbro external in a box that I bought a while back that I can put on it. I don't even know what brand the one I have on it now is. It is still working but I don't trust it.

I've got the car up on jackstands now doing a complete brake job. I thought it would be a good time to put in an in-tank pump. But, I guess not.

About the only way I could see doing that for me is to be in a parts house that stocked these things and have them allow me access to their shelves so I could pull them out of the box and do measurements and compare to my original sender. That might be hard to pull off. I live in a small town too.

LATECH Gotcha... just need to shop around for something close enough that some minor tweeking can fix .

I'm not worried about the fuel lines at all. I've got the tools to change it over to AN.
It's getting the angle and length of the pickup and float arm that I'd be worried about. Not sure I want to invest in that sender, bend it up and not be able to get it right.

LATECH The pump isnt included, and can be changed. Its the fuel line fittings that is the main concern. The O ring style fittings pictured on this pump are correct for the 1987 El Camino with fuel injection
You will have to get the rest of the fuel lines from another source as the carb setup on the car as it is now wont work.

Yeah, it would be easier since that has the extra tube and wiring already.
But, I'm not confident I could duplicate the angle and length of everything. If I tried and failed then I would be wasting money.

Did that '92 pickup have port fuel injection? If they were tbi, the pressure on the pump for that application wouldn't be right.

LATECH Start with something like this, might be easier.
This one fits a 92 chevy 1/2 ton
It has all the right stuff, just needs some minor mods.

Getting a pump on this sender looks complicated to me.

I'd have to find the parts to get wires through it too. Plus another tube for a return line.

LATECH Dichromate plating or zinc plating isnt that hard from what I know about it. They would be a better solution than a "coating".
Even coating the welded areas with lead works well.
Modding a sending unit shouldnt be to hard, the captive O ring fittings would be the hardest part. Hydra crimp makes a crimp tool that forms them on bare 5/16 and 3/8 line but the tool is 400 bucks...even from tool topia.
I have used compression fittings that were hose barb on the opposite end on raw tubing ends, and shoved nylon fuel line on the barbed end to create a leakproof fuel line in the past.
Here in the rust belt, making brake lines and fuel lines is my favorite past time...: D

That may be true. But still not real easy.
I need to keep everything so it won't corrode.

My original idea was presuming that a coating like I provided a link to is a good reliable solution. I'd have the same issues if I used steel to mod a sender.

They do not.
Every once in a while I've run across an NOS one. They are over $400.

No. I'm committed to my exhaust system.

It's also not a perfect fit even without that. It's a poly tank too. They also have been discontinued. It would be hard to find in a wrecking yard in my neck of the woods. So, several reasons I don't want to go that route.
