Bryan59EC Thanks Dave.
Virtually everything having to do with the steering (and brakes -4-whel disc)came from CPP.
605 box, 706 bar, and all front end joints and ends.
(I did have to make my own box mount to use the sway bar---this actually put the idler and pitman much closer to the same angle than the mout that came with my kit.

I guess when SHE is not looking, I can order the new box for the x-frame cars--

605 vs 500 & 600

Bryan,

There are folks who swear by their 605 boxes. The majority are disappointed by the lack of feed back (overpowered) and wandering (no return to center). The 605 steering box is not a recirculating ball design and has a stamped metal cover which controls shaft end play. The CPP500 is a new casting with the internals of a late model steering box. It has great feed back and return to center. I would assume that the new 600 is similar. There is confusion because there was a 600 series box that preceded the 500 series. That 600 series box is no longer made. You can find information on the CPP forum @ ChevyTalk.com .

My CPP500 would hold center at speed but would not return to center below 15 MPH with 3/4 degrees of caster. Tri five Chevies by design have limited front alignment adjustment. Adding the CPP tubular upper a-arms allowed 3 1/2 degrees caster. Now the wheel returns to center and the car drives about as good as any new car.

Sorry that your 605 box is not working out. You are not alone. There are other companies that make quality steering upgrade components. I only have experience with the CPP products that are on my '55 so that is all I will comment on.

Bryan59EC nope----the 500 series is for the tri-5 chebbies (rear steer long pitman shaft)

The 600 series would be for the 58-64 (front steer short pitman shaft)

This box would replace the slave unit you have now, may need to get a different pump----WILL need to use a non powersteering centerlink and pitman arm. (I believe CPP has parts to convert the centerlink)

63impalass So Can I Put The 500 Steering Box On My 63 I Want It Tight And If I Do That Can I Use The Same Power Steering Pump And Slave Cylinder Or Do I Replace It All The Front End Only Has About 8,000 Miles On It. Thanks Guys

How do you like that box???
I have a 605 in the 59 and am not happy with it at all---seems to wander and the front feels sloppy----Nothing has more than 3000 miles on it.

Camber at -.5 and caster at +1 I think someone set the to to 0.

If the 500 box is the same as the 600 (internally), I was wondering how it feels to you?

The 605 seems to have way too much play in it.

(also considering going to a 64 centerlink and pitman to eliminate the ball/socket and springs in the centerlink)

HUH? Sorry about that. CPP's online catalog is a bit difficult to navigate. You have to search for Impala and still everything from 1955 to 1967 is listed together.

Maybe just a rebuild of the stock components would bring her up to snuff?

You may wish to check Classic Performance Products. They have a new 600 series
steering box for your car as well as a full line of performance suspension upgrades and steering columns.
I have a CPP500 steering box on my '55 Chevy as well as CPP tubular upper a-arms. The old "shoebox" drives like a new car.

hello i was wanting to upgrade my old leaky steering componets with new and improved. i heard about this abs gearbox and column i was waondering if anyone has heard about that for beefin up old chevy front ends thanks!!!1
