. Also a Turbonique 'Self-powered Supercharger'... officially known as Auxillary Power Supercharger. Liguid-fueled gas turbine spun the centrifugal supercharger at the flip of a dash mounted switch:
. "Testing took a 1963 409 from 405 HP up to 835 HP"
. A 1,980 HP Turbonique jet 'thrust' engine cost $199... sometimes TWO were put on back of a Go-kart...!

Eric got it mostly correct. It didn't replace the diff cover, it was part of a whole differential assy. For about five grand you could power your auto with a rocket powered rear end! And screw it, for a few more grand Turbonique would supply you with a real to God rocket engine! Nifty! Turbonique was in business from 1962 to 1969.
All in all a great add on accessory. Lots better than fuzzy dice.

Turbonigue Rocket Turbine Drag Axle, from the mid -1960's, bolt's to the rear axle in place of the rear cover and drives the pinion gear...something like 1100-1300 hp way back in 1965.
"Sizzler" '65 Chevelle, "Pegasus" '65 Mustang 2+2, an early VW Bug called "Black Widow" can be found in articles and pics on various websites and Magazine sites.
I guess pretty uncontrollable on the tires of the day....kind of fascinating though. Ran on a mono-propellant called Thermolene (basically a stable rocket fuel).
Several small pure thrust versions were also made, for Go-Kart use.
I haven't got a trivia question to use, just happened to know what this one was, so you guys carry the ball for me on that....
