MARTINSR LOL, I hate that common sense crap Frank! No I haven't checked with another gauge. But why is it working now?

I have another and I'll check it.

As per my post of 5-24-12. Did you ever check the temp with a known good guage?
Correct me if I am wrong, all air through the core is from the vent. Hard to beleave.
You said turning the heater on or off had an effect on engine temp. Are you refering to the fan control or water valve?
Back in my day (do I sound like a TV ad?) and when that Rambler was built we didn't have a Vacuum sucker for the cooling system.
I still think you have a guage problem not a cooling problem.
Conferm true engine temp and we'll talk.

farna I've never used a vacuum system and never had a problem with my old 61-63 Americans years ago. Heater is a bit different but in the same location and has the same hose routing. I bet you had the heater valve closed when you thought it was on. Little things like that still happen to the most experienced people! Regardless of how or why, it's nice to have it fixed I know!

MARTINSR I have to tell you, I am a little red faced here. I have lived with this problem now for over a year. I would simply open the heater control valve and let the core fill, then close it and turn on the fan to warm the cabin then open the valve filling the core then closing it. If I left it open the sucker would overheat. You could literally watch the needle going up!

So yesterday I am adjusting the brakes and what not around the car checking fluids and I notice that the temp sending unit is literally two inches from the heater control valve in the head. Anyway, I just got to thinking about this problem and decided to vacuum out the system again. The rad level was about two inches down from the cap, it's a big old tank so this left plenty of coolent in there. I know I did it before and I know the heater control valve was open (I'm pretty sure I did that, it's cooling systems 101) so I vacuumed it out and left it go maybe longer, really making sure. The rad hoses were collapsed good. All the while no coolent was sucked out by the vacuuming! There normally would be a little bit being the coolent was so high in the rad. Most any time there is coolent at all in the rad you are going to get a little being sucked up. Anyway, after vacuuming it sucked in a bunch of coolent! maybe a half gallon or more. I left it there under vacuum for a lot longer than usual, it will get down to a few pounds and I often will just pull the thing off and top off the tank and that's it. But this time I left it there until the gauge read zero while I worked on other things on the car.

Today on the way to work I drove all the way with the heater on! It ran perfectly normal the whole way, it would have never done that before. There WAS an air pocket in the heater core!

Damn that vacuum system is awesome, do bad I didn't do it right a year ago.

MARTINSR You are right I need to confirm the temp.

Thanks for the ideas. Right now I am out in the driveway with it fixing the seat so I can get a wheelchair bound friend into it so I can drive him to the Goodguys show this coming weekend.

Frankinforesthill Hey Brian,
Couple O things,
If the guage is electric and reads low 99% of the time you may have an electron problem.
If you did not conferm the real engine temp. Is it overheating?
Back to the 99%. (and not for a protest) Is the thermostat opening and closing correctly.
One more thing. You and this thread is why I joined this group. Been hiding in the shadows for a long while. The Rambler brought me out. Back in the day when I worked for a living I got all the weird and crazy things to fix.
One more, more, thing. I am really an old guy just a new guy here. Don't give a crap about "PC" but I do resepct the other guy and his opinion.

Thanks Frank, she is very loved that's for sure.

1. It's electric.
2. No, the thing is it reads low 99% of the time and when it goes up, it makes sense.
3. It goes thru it, into the interior.
4. Yes my right hand which pulls a vent open or closed that is over the heater core.

1. Is the guage in the car mechanical or electric?
2. Did you check engine temp. with known good guage?
3. Is vent air going through the heater or just towards it?
4. What controls the vent? (don't tell me your right hand)
5. Is there a thermostat of the correct rating in the engine?

John long You are right Brian and everyone of them have their idiosyncrasies. (thank goodness for spell check). The roadster has the temp gauge in the head and the fan sensor in the bottom of the radiator. In town the fan cycles between 180 and 185. On the interstate it won't cycle on until about 205 so I just flip it on at 185 or 190. Anyone else would move the fan sensor to the other head but I am so used to it i don't think about it any more. Just flip the switch.

I really like the Rambler. It definitely has personality.

MARTINSR I tried that too John, then found that I had it opened too far and the damn thing heated up because I wasn't paying attention. I have just given up and will open it for a few minutes then close it, it's like flying an airplane these old cars, you need to be on your toes. And I LOVE IT.

John long Brian, you never did post what happened if you just opened the water control valve part way. That sounded like a good suggestion if, by chance, the heater was taking to much water away from the radiator.

MARTINSR No thanks, that's what I have remember! The bummer is the fan is about a half inch at tops from the core. Then it hangs over the bottom and misses most of the core on the sides. It is a horribly inefficient set up. The water pump has a long shaft that stuffs it against the rad. So there is no room for much of anything else but a flex fan, a 14" flex fan. If it was a little bit aways from the core a nice shroud would work great as it could get the air coming thru the whole core. But this way I am going to have to have a shroud that is only about a half inch away. I still think it will be better than nothing but that is another project that I really don't feel like doing.


For the time being, I will just drive it every day because it "works".
