malc As impressive as these machines are they are no match for Nitro.
It was the Nitro ban that bought these beasts into being, although by the time the Nitro ban was lifted they were turning some good times.

Don Vesco will only be there in 'spirit'. The Turbinator car is being updated and the new revamped body is about finished

This is my 1/18 diecast.

That is such a cool car, one of the most artful ever. It was the first car to break into the 8's on gas. It did it at the legendary (around here at least) Half Moon Bay drag strip.

That's the ocean you see off to the right of the track! Is that twin engine car at 1:02 in the Freight train? It isn't painted red but darn sure looks a lot like it.
Ivo's Four engine runs at 1:40!!!

Dave57210 Jets are not wheel driven. Just sort of a very low-flying plane.
(Personal view- I don't consider them to be "true" cars at all! Feel free to disagree)

Fastest wheel-driven car was the Team Vesco entry called "Turbinator" that ran a turbine engine, geared to drive the wheels and hit 470 something, making it the fastest wheel-driven car in history. Don & Rick Vesco are planning to bring "Turbinator II" to the Salt this year to try for a wheel-driven speed of 500 or better!

Poteet's Speed Demon is the fastest piston-powered car in history (so far) with a speed exiting the traps of 462. Poteet is also gunning for 500, wheel driven, with piston power.

Gonna be an exciting time this year!

If ya miss seeing it, you only have yourself to blame. Bring a tent or a camper - its free to camp on the salt. The ultimate low-cost trip to watch a once in a lifetime contest to see who hits 500 first!

Faster than the speed of sound.

Goldenrod by the Summers Brothers held the record of 409.277 and
it stood for 41 years.

Poteet & Main's "SPEED DEMON" has hit 462 mph with A SINGLE SBC! The engine, known as the "Hellfire" is a Kenny Duttweiler creation of 347 cid, making approx 2,000 hp (and over 1200 lb-ft of torque) at 8,800 rpm

They are going for 500 mph with it, and it has been reported that Kenny is building a new Hellfire motor that makes the old one look puny by comparison.

They say the secret is to limit the torque to the higher RPM ranges so you don't spend your whole run just spinning the wheels, which is why they are using a single SBC with twin turbos instead of big blocks, multi engines, etc.

We are getting off the topic of the Freight Train - untill I looked at that site, I had forgotten the "cow catcher" front on it! I got a laugh out of that "way back when" and still do!

Tommy is a interesting guy. Not only was he one of the original Mouseketeers, he was probably the first drag race exhibitionist. He was paid to drive both his twin and his four engine cars all across the U.S.
