IMO, I would consider headers before beating yourself up over x or h pipes. You're likely leaving 25-50 HP on the table running the stock manifolds. As far as the rest of the exhaust system, just remember low restriction.

painted jester You will lose HP and torque with the H pipe but get a leveler exhaust sound, at least the X pipe will keep the HP and torque close and the X pipe levels out the pulses to the ears better! But on the street you will gain nothing unless you like donating your money and at the strip performance is not gained at all! Exhaust wants to run in a straight unrestricted path all the cross pipes do is create a pulse that levels the final sound of the exhaust coming out the two separate exhaust pipes from each side of the engine a single exhaust pipe or muffler can do the same thing or tri y headers have the same affect with a large gain in HP and torque over stock manifolds!!! Invest your money in headers

AutoGear Nothing wrong with trying to maximize your potential. I'd go with the H-pipe and a low restriction muffler
If you dont want 'popping', don't run glasspacks on true duals without a resonator.

If you install a balance pipe; you may want to think about not welding it in solid. I helped a friend R&R his 700r4 and we had to sawzall his homemade exhaust system...He was kinda grumpy about it.

bigdog7373 Not much difference between the two performance wise. The h-pipe will give the classic muscle car noise, the x-pipe will give it a more modern v8 sound. It's mostly about what will fit the car and you budget, plus what sound you prefer.
Ever consider a dual in/dual out muffler? I had one and the sound was amazing. Really smooth yet muscly sound. I really liked it. I don't know how it would affect performance vs a dual muffler system though. I do believe that some sort of crossover, whether it be h or x pipe, or a dual in/out muffler will yeil better performance than a dual unbalanced system.

painted jester Just run duals with glass packs in the middle & resonators on the ends! Like in the 60s the 289 with the dual grind cam would sound nostalgic look for a dual quad intake at swap meets or even new at speedway!!! Cruisers aren't supposed to be fast just look cool

alberatzi I appreciate all the advice & constructive criticism. I want to balance the exhaust pulses from both banks so I don't get those annoying popping sounds from my exhaust, which is why I asked the question in the first place. Again- thank you all so much for everything!

455olds That is a very heavy car for such a small engine. My 3/4 ton truck can't weigh much if any more than that car.
Turbo or supercharge it if you want it to get out of its own way.

vht I wouldn't bother with either. I don't think you'll see much difference with that heavy car. More cubes would help more than anything.

LATECH The amount of difference in power gain from an X pipe as opposed to an H pipe is negligible , unless you are up in the 5-600 horse range. Then the X might net 7-10 h orses.
Run the H. They are far cheaper, I have the Flowmaster H pipe mandrel bent system on my ride. It was like 360 bucks from summit. Worked out nice.
I would order it without mufflers if I did it again as the flowmasters are a bit droney at a certain RPM. I think the magnaflows are a better sound...like the 40 series.Or even the 40 series deltas.
My buddy was standing around when I drove by and he said it sounded real good with the flowmasters on it. And it sounds good at an idle and when revving in the shop, just wanted to mention the flow masters do have a little drone at certain RPMs and may or may not on your car.

poncho62 On one hand you are saying its just a cruiser and then you want as much power as possible.......

Face the facts...its a big car. That little 289 is overworked.....If you want to go fast, you are going to need more cubes....maybe a big block

or, just be happy with what you have

alberatzi Well, my engine's not stock. Pistons are +.030, crank is -.010, Jegs cam & lifters~ Lift: .448"/.472" Adv. Duration: 262/272, Comp pushrods, Comp Magnum roller tip rocker arms, Pertronix HEI distributor, MSD Helicore Wires, Edelbrock Performer intake, Edelbrock 600 CFM 4 bbl (stock intake was cast iron w/ 2 bbl), Autolite Platinum plugs with a 3" K&N air filter to top it all off. Keep in mind this car weighs around 4800 lbs. & it's a cruiser, not a bruiser.

vinniekq2 wont make much difference on a stock engine
adding an"H" pipe is cheaper,makes it quieter and sounds better
