mrshotrod I had an issue like that as well, from what I've been told you can't use leather needles on vinyl. I went down to a 135 #18 needle, I think they said thats the smallest they come in for industrial/commercial machines, I haven't had a problem with that since. But keep in mind your thread size, upholstery thread may not fit in an eye that small. I think i have #69 nylon thread and its ok.
Here is an interesting link on leather needles
I have to go to an upholstery supplier for my needles, I'm pretty sure you can't buy these just anywhere.
Groz-Beckett is the brand I use I know singer makes some. I think this will help send you in the right direction.

DanTwoLakes Any good quality needle is fine. All of the names you mentioned are fine. (BTW, Groz Beckert is the name you're looking for.) I usually use size 21 needles. Your problem might be your thread is too small. I use size 92, size 138, size 207 and size 270 polyester thread. To sew with size 207 and size 270 you would need a size 24 needle.

correct needles

I'm doing some research to help someone working on an auto upholstery. They are working on a Pfaff 145 which uses the 190 series needles. Sewing leather is not a problem but the vinyl does present some issues, particularly the holes created by the needle being too large.

She switched from the 24 thickness to a 21 but still has the issue with the holes being too large. Of course, we're going to go with a thinner needle but am looking for needle size recommendations for automotive interior vinyl as well as needle manufacturer. Orange, Organ, Schmetz, Grosspeck(sp) etc.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
