I started 'er up last week... teeth mesh as they should. No surprises.
You found the off-brand stuff doesn't work too, huh?

Starter prob here too!
Mitchman, When you said you ordered another starter with a bowtie on the side, Was that from jegs/summit or was it from a place called chevrolet performance? I have the exact same problem.

|Richiehd||Yeah look at the difference between pic 1 and pic 3. Pic 1 the starter looks like it mounts 1/8 inch further forward (away from flywheel) than in pic 3. Good call Mitchman, I guess thats a starter for earlier motor? or just Chinese engineering? Thankl for updating us.|

Chevrolet Performance starter fits like it should, teeth mesh fully, backlash is good. The other two 'off brands' are going back.
Glad to get this off the list.

|Richiehd||Mousefink, I dont think that is going to help him, flywheel is already too far out, with no shims.|

I'll post later for posterity.

It wont help in this instance. The flexplates you are talking about are for GEN 3/4 use as well.

The difference is the pre 86 and post 86 flexplates. Pre 86 had the 2 piece RMS and the post 86 had the 1 pice RMS.
The 1 piece RMS required the round crank end which necessitated the flexplate/flywheel with the welded on weight to make up for teh weight that was on the 2 piece RMS cranks.
I piece RMS left, 2 piece RMS right
I piece RMS
400 2 piece RMS
There isnt any difference between Vortec(1996-1999 305/350) and non-Vortec (1986-1995) flexplates.
I installed a reman starter on my 1997 Vortec 350 truck, and after a short while it started to make horrible noises as the starter gear wasnt fully engaging the flexplate gear.
Never did solve that issue.

|68NovaSS||I don't know, so asking, is there a difference between Vortec and early SBC starters? I see some mini starters listed do not work with LS motors.|

|Richiehd||Vortec flywheel different than earlier flywheel? I think it has weights on it. Just asking, I dont know|

Besides the number of gear teeth and overall diameter, there are two types of flex plates. One flex plate has a "flat" crank flange bolt circle with a spacer between the crank flange and the flex plate, and it uses longer bolts. The other has a "dished" crank flange bolt circle. Just something to think about because I have see this happen before.
Spacer, GM 12563532 (1 spacer)
Bolts, GM 11569956 (pack of 10 bolts) *
*Some dealers will break up a package of parts and some won't.
