one of my friends was in this exact delema.
he wants decent power for his 57 chevy belair.
i told him the best way to learn is to do it yourself.
ive built a few engines in my day, so i called up summit and ordered the rotating assembly (fully forged).
ordered edelbrocks 460 hp top end kit.
we took a core 010 350 block to the machinist, and he wanted 900 to do the machining.
i called up summit, and got a roller block 4 bolt main, for 800. fukky preped for a 383.
we have 4600 into the engine so far, minus carb, lifters, rockers, pushrods, and goodies.
you can get a 425 hp create engine for 5600, so the prices are about the same.
knowledge is priceless.
tools are pricey but last a life time.
the warenty these guys claim to give you is based on a liscenced shop doing the work.

get a piece of paper and write down everything you know that you will need and what you expect from the 383.
The figure out how you will tune it.
Then consider a totalled donor v-8 car for all the items you will need,like mounts/wiring/rad if possible,,,,the total costs might be higher than selling your car and buying another car in good shape

you want to drive it, or look at it..
put a gen 1 small block in it. and you can look at it all you want but never drive it..
you can tow it to a track.. but it'll never see the street.. legally..

|Pauls_camaro||I talked to one guy about the swap he put a ls6 in his from a v6 and Iight just follow the path he did except 383 and for the wireing harness not sure what do do about that I don't think I can use one out of an ls1 / lt1|

Yea there is no budget and I'm going to be doing most of well all the work besides the machining
An do don't want just a ls1 to simple of a solution .
I've worked on 350s for a long time just have never made a 383 or done a v6 to v8

go get a v8 car..
a 01 would be a ls1 based engine.. v8
a gen 1 or lt gen2 isn't gonna fly with the feds and epa..

It's a auto now and I want to put a 6 speed in
I'm pretty sure I have to swap out the rear end and possibly front end I was thinking about getting the front end cradle assembly off a v8 but wasn't sure if that would work

I'm sure I don't need mention this but just in case. If you buy a crate engine from a builder make sure you choose one that has a proven track record...both with building the engine, producing the longevity and power that they claim and how they stand behind what they build with respect to warranty. Anybody can offer you the moon when it comes to warranty...offering and coming through are two different things.

Again X2 on every post. I've built countless engines in the past, the real long ago past, the last engine I built that went fast was a 428 Pontiac...that was over 10 years ago. I am now in the throws of a another Pontiac build and when it comes to the engine...I will build it...but, I'll have the pros watching every step, looking over my shoulder. As Vinnie said, I don't know how to unlock every bit of free Horse Power...and watching Horse Power TV...well that's great but wait till you start building and one little thing you forgot...Oops, NO warranty, that's where you say woulda, shoulda, coulda.
