Hi. Yesterday my new cam and lifters. Were dilivered But now im dnt know if i have to pump them up or put them in a container with oil. The edelbrock says no but a lot of people are saying yes . So what to do .. Thnx

Wezz, you can mix it or add it in the valve cover either way, you have the break in lube already on the cam lobes and lifters and your priming the pump and oil galleys before you start the engine so you will be alright either way Its no big deal! Ive seen it done both ways and Ive done it both ways!!

I don't know that oil Wezz "10w40 semy sentetic" and you said it was a mineral oil? I don't know:confused: I don't use synthetic or mineral oils except in rotary engines where it is recommended! I wouldn't use it in your engine! But I'm no expert on oils:confused: Maybe Vinnie or Cobalt , 1Gary, Fbird, techinspector etc can chime in on that and give you a definite answer!! I wouldn't guess on something that important !!!

Its 4:04 am LOL I have to get up in 3 HRs :welcome: GNite Wezz

Add the whole bottle of Lucas unless the oil you use has a high Zddp level already!
1gary is right and I agree , in my opinion, I would drain it out and change the filter, add good oil and the whole bottle of the Lucas mix it first seeing as you already primed and filled the oil pump and galleys with the synthetic!

Myself and 1gary may be incorrect on our assumptions about synthetics but we have our own views!

Wezz Motor cycle oils like used in Harley Davisons or BMWs have high zddp levels! see what the motorcycle guys are using!

Sufficient ZDDP in new or fresh flat tappet cam and lifter engines is absolutely CRITICAL!!

Wezz I talked to my nephew in Belgium, can you get Cen-pe-co Super Racing Oil where your at? it has 2400 parts per million zinc and 2200 ppm phosphate it would work fine for the half hour break in of the engine. and to run after Break in!

I talked to a classic MGB owner here , he uses Comma Premium oil or Comma Classic the Comma Premium is better for its extra ZDDP. can you get that there?

I know our language barrier is confusing to you (and it is aggravating LOL) There is a hot rod club in Holland They have a web site contact them!!! They will probably help you a lot!!!!

Wezz If you trust that mans opinions do as he says but if there is any doubt in your mind do more research! Check with Hot Rod club members over there!!! I suggested My opinions so did 1 Gary. Wait for the others to post what they think on this thread!!!

Contact the cruizinangels link posted bellow they would know the oils found in the Netherlands you need, Or another club in the Netherlands in the list on the site I posted below!!!> they speak your language and know the oils found in your area The Joe Gibbs oil here in the parts stores sells for 15 dollars a QT. and on summit its 9 dollars a Qt. expensive to some!! I know you already bought that oil you have and would like to use it!!! I looked it up and can't find any good info on it! So I won't recommend it!! I also don't know how the Lucas would react with its formula?. Malc lives in Spain PM him He may know that oil you want to use and he may recommend it?

For break in: I use straight 30 non detergent ZDDP oil with Lucas on older engine rebuilds like flat head Fords, and use 10 w 30 with ZDDP with Lucas on stock builds, but for high pressure race engines I have been using the Joe Gibbs 15 w 50 for break in!

I did a search on the JOE GIBBS and it is a mineral oil! LOL I didn't know that? I switched to it because I was told by a friend that it was very good ! Now I will do a lot more research to see if I should switch to The mineral oil LOL! I used to use Shell Rotella, before that the old Kendal before it went Mineral and synthetic. Its getting hard to find the older petroleum-based oils! Mineral oils I always thought of as over processed petroleum oil ( baby oil ) LOL:D I may have to change my thinking:thumbup: Because of this thread Wezz!!!:D

Wezz! after you break in the cam,( about 1/2 hr to 45 MIN.) drain the break in oil and change the filter and add new oil with ZDDP or a ZDDP additive if you need it> But for your ring and highway break in!!! Don't run the cam break in oil when breaking in the engine on the street It will be full of contaminants from your overhaul on the engine and the initial break in of the cam lifters etc! I never do an engine driven break in under load with the same oil or filter that I use for the initial cam break in! But that's just me! I'm sure others on here will argue but that's the way I do it!!

"btw dont forget i onley have a new cam! not the pistons etc[/QUOTE]"

I know that Wezz, but you did the heads and the rest of the overhaul, so anything that you didn't see or missed when cleaning will wash loose with the oil flow and go to the pan and some to the filter And the more hrs on the engine with the cam break in oil in it the more likely something can be picked up and travel through the engine. You used a wire wheel remember? and probably gasket sealer, and maybe sand paper or grinding wheels,ETC. A few grains of metal filings or grit off a grindstone or a lost wire bristle or paint over spray peeling loose in the block or the thick molly lube if used, or the small metal particles from cam break in can cause trouble!

Good oils: Lucas Hot Rod and Classic Hi-Performance Oil, Valvoline VR1, Joe Gibb, etc There are still many that are more reasonably priced I look for a minimum 1200 ppm ZDDP or higher the Rotella 15/40 for tubo diesel used to have it?

I still add the GM ZDDP oil additive Recommended by GM for their older engines with flat tappets!! I can get it at any GM dealer or I use STP in a pinch or Lucas I don't trust the oil company's in what they update in their tech sheets most are out dated and things are changing fast with the ZDDP levels of oils!!!!

The new Mineral oils and synthetic oils contain higher levels of detergents and dispersants which deter the Zddp from adhering to metals so adding ZDDP to oils isn't a guarantee the addition of an additive (ZDDP) will help the cam life in all formulas of oil. I know that Joe Gibb oil for early engines is formulated to be compatible and already has a high level of ZDDP!

Shell Rotella T no longer has the minimum ZDDP only 800 PPM max. now!! But the addition of a ZDDP additive should be compatible!
