The early 9 inch rear ends ('57 through '64) had the fill plug in the back of the housing. There was no plug in the case.
You can't just say that a certain amout will be fine for any 9 inch housing. Some have a full bowl cover on the back that will hold much more oil than the covers that are flat with a bulge for the ring gear. Some housings have a long tapered center and others have a small round center. These will hold different amounts of oil.

|snkbyt||Really, don't think I've ever seen a 9" 3rd member with no fill on the left side? Can you drill and put in a pipe plug?|

|big gear head||Different housings take different amounts. They are not made the same. Some are smaller in the middle and some are larger. See if you can find a later chunk and measure the height of the fill plug and put one in yours.|

nine inch rearend
I have a nine inch rear end out of a 1976 Bronco and apparently an early center section. There is no fill plug in the third member and so I will fill through the vent but my question is how much fluid. My books are telling me 6.5 pints. Anyone know for sure? Tim
