Looks like fate made that decision for me today just discovered three bad lifters so im gonna take that as a sign and pony up for a retrofit set and use my other block. And i have this retro roller cam already which should do fine and be a little more radical.

ap72 It's not as expensive as you think, ebay turbo, e85, and a set of the biggest injectors you can find, maybe a fuel pump too.

Turbo imports are the new cheap way to go fast. Classic muscle is too expensive.

Raptorus1 I agree about the EFI been there and loved it. I want to stay with the carb on this one. Like I said before this is just my weekend cruiser. Just want something nice with the power I need to keep the children in the ricers off my nerves lol. My 6al and billet dist is about as exotic as this car will get. Have a 4th gen camaro I will be going all out on soon enough.

Watching all those things isn't a bad thing, it's helped me dial in my air temp correction factor and small things like that. You just need to understand that as you go required changes become smaller and smaller.

I would argue that tuning EFI and electronic timing is WAY WAY WAY easier than messing with jets or a mechanical dizzy, and I grew up on carbs and distributors.

datalog and punch a few keys... you can literally tune your car while wearing a suit on your way to Sunday service- try that with a carb and a distributor.

steeny I agree that EFI is the way to go but most people have a hard enough time building an engine sensibly much less mapping fuel management curves that work. Especially something a little warmed over. Timing curves are hard enough for some to get correct. I say this not to be an ***** but just reality from my experience with many hot rodders.

ap72 switching to overkill mode will help you get a quicker et, but on the street durability matters.

I'd back off on the lift for a durability and maintenance stand point. .500" lift or a little more will be more than adequate for your goals, I'd limit it to .550" or below especially with stud mount rockers if you want a low maintenance engine.

I used to be a guy that chased after aggressive lift too, as it will get you a few more ponies, now I choose to give up a few ponies to save some bucks and allow me more time behind the wheel.

You have 383ci and pretty good heads, your power goals are not that hard to meet and still have GREAT drive-ability and durability. You can shoot for an extra 50hp but you'll have to start trading durability and/or cost.

Your original plan looks to be a great street engine, my only change would be to run EFI, but that's a whole separate subject. (you'd be surprised how much nicer EFI can make a car even if it adds 0hp, there's so much more to an engine than hp and EFI really makes that obvious)

With 1.6 rockers, the valve lift is 0.565"/0.587"

The flow numbers I found for the heads used a 4.155" intake pipe and that pysses me off a little bit. All of us know that a larger pipe will result in higher numbers, but if you're bolting the heads onto a 4.030" bore block, then the numbers are bogus. I factored their numbers by 0.95 and here are the results.....

Give up 25 hp with the shorter cam.
That cam was actually my first choice but since I am using the factory roller lifter setup my concern with exceeding .354 lobe lift was pushing the lifter below the dogbone. Am I wrong in that line of thinking? If I can get away with the bigger cam I certainly would.

steeny Flat top pistons, 2 eyebrows, .025 down the hole (light clean up on the deck) .041 felpro head gaskets and a 3 core radiator. Would rattle the valves if I got a hold of some not so good gas. Had to run it a little rich or it would complain!!
