After filling (qrt low maybe) I took about 1 mile ride and when I got home seem to be fine. Wow next morning had about qrt all over floor, pan was all wet (whole thing) I have electric speedo cable attached. Wet but seems dryer then pan? Sat all winter and I needed more fluid to get trans to shift, so I really don't believe I overfilled it Any ideas, I am not a trans guy, yet!!! Dana

Need new seal on speedo cable and O-ring

Just fixed neighbors '52 Chev truck with T400 trans leak. The speedo cable had
a "seal" and there was an O-ring on the housing that was removed to get to
speedo gear. Chevrolet dealer still had these parts in stock!

The speedo gear actually had a chunk broken out where the cable entered and
was alllowing fluid to bypass there as well. Red speedo gear was fun to find...

T-350 trans leaks fluid after sitting?

I have asked about the trans problem driving its fine, but when sits over night it leaks all over maybey least a qrt. I started to check on this before I see if vent is plugged, is it normal after sitting for say 2 weeks to pull out dip stick and holder and have approx 1 qrt of trans fluid spill out? Maybey I habe overfilled. I know it has to warm up to check, I understand that. What is normal after sitting long periods to have spill over If you pull dipstick and holder? Thanks Dana

The trans is drain back fluid out the torque converter. This happens when the trans sits for a long time

If it coming out of the filler tube, it sounds like the breather may be plugged since the fluid level would be so high to spill out the filler tube it's self... Normally the fluid would spill out the breather which is located lower than the top of the filler tube, unless you have cut the filler tube down to a short unit

350 turbo trans ?

Whoops, I didn't explain right. After sitting approx 2, 3 weeks with a qrt of spillage, I pullud out dipstic and holder. Fluid came out of the whole approx 3/4 qrt. So I let it go and now it's at the top of the pans hole, where dipstick holder goe. Is this normal when you take out holder to have this much fluid? Sorry if I didn't explain correctly, Dana

A search brought this thread up.

My T-350 leaks haha I think everybody's does.

I made a bad show last night at the Monday cruise in. I pulled in a bit late and parked on the level. about ten minutes later there was about a half a qt of fluid on the ground and steadily leaking at the front of the pan. The right side of the car was very slightly lower. It looks like it was coming fron the shifter rod on the left side of the trans and ran around the pan then on the ground. I had to walk over to the local auto parts store and get a bag of oil dry to cover the mess. I was embarassed.

I went for months last year without a drop of leakage. Then near the end of the season the car got moved in the shop and it leaked about a quart. This has happend before. I did find that they pushed it backwards with the shifter in drive.

I did a test after this. I drove the car about 150 miles then checked the fluid while running and in park. level was fine. Then I let the car sit for a couple days. No leaks. Then we put the shifter in drive and pushed it backwards about 60 feet. then pushed it back to it's original spot. It sat over the week end and lost about half a qt in the shallow pan under the car.

I then repeated the test a few weeks later but instead we pushed the car in neutral. It sat again for a couple days and no leaks.

This probably wasn't the best test but I'm really trying to get to the bottom of this occasional leak stuff. It doesn't leak whie it is running, just when it sits for a while. I'm aware of the converter drain back. It still should not leak. None is coming out of the vent either.

I'm considering getting a deep pan and not add the extra fluid. Hopefully the drain back would be less than the 2 qts extra capacity. I only have a 11 inch converter. I do have a good size cooler which is slightly higher than the trans.

What do you think about the deep pan idea.??
