"00" would be for a 400, "50" for a 350, and "55" for a 455. They didn't cast the whole number in the lifter galley. The easiest thing is to get the block casting number or the block date code & the block code that is stamped into the front of the block just under the passenger side head. Post those numbers and we can tell you exactly what you have.

the most for sure way to find out is by pulling the heads and measuring the bore. however, there is only .005" between a 400 and a 455. there are numbers on the passenger bank on the front face and the rear casting below the head.

mabe youll get lucky!

you can also look under the #1 exhaust port for a cubic inch casting.
if it says 350 or 400, it would be a post 73 block(i know in the 70's they started stamping them, just cant remember what year)
Good call, my '72 400 is casted in the block on the drivers side also. Good luck.

LATECH This page has pictures....much better.....

How to identify your Pontiac engine
Look at it closely.
You have to ID the block, then the date code. Then the engine code is the last step. You cant ID the block merely from the code on the front as codes were used for may different engines over the years.

LATECH Here is a list
Pontiac Engine Block Casting Numbers

What numbers are the heads by the way?
05-22-2013 07:38 PM
LATECH Look on the back of the engine behind the passenger side cylinder head. There is a number cast into the block.
There are a few numbers for a 69 400. 9790071 is one
9792506 is for the RA IV
9792968 is the RA V
The first one is more common , the second two...not so much
A 9790079 is a 350

Look back there for the numbers.

350 vs 400 pontiac engine ID

Recently bought a 69 Firebird and was told it is a 400 CU Pontiac engine. This is my first Pontiac and would appreciate any info as far as telling the difference between a 350 and 400. Thanks for any help I'm a new member.
