Thanks. I either get anal about neatness or go 180 degrees the other way and am beyond messy

ap72 before you go too far check the throttle shaft play in the carb, edelbrocks are notorious for wearing there and it is a PITA to fix.

When I did them I would also take a fairly thin and fine cartridge roll and smooth over the casting lie as well, there seems to be a lot of them in an Edelbrock carb, it may or may not do much but I felt it helped slightly with metering signal. You can also fill in some areas with epoxy and smooth them over to get a more contoured path- all little things that can help but don't HAVE to be done.

Be sure to thuroughly clean the air passages on the carb, those have always been the problem areas for me.

Edelbrock 1406 rebuild question

When rebuilding a 1406, can you dip the body? I remember my mikuni carbs had rubber bushings on the butterfly valves and could not be dipped. Never rebuilt an edelbrock, but it looks like a straightforward process, just want to make sure I dont ruin any internals by dipping it.
