If you're considering a swap to disc brakes, the Explorer brakes will bolt up to the late large bearing ends while Crown Vic brakes bolt up to the small bearing ends.

I don't think I would trust a stock Ford Traction Lock. Look into a Truetrac if this will be mostly street driven. A stock '70 case would probably hold up on the street, but if you can find a nodular case with a Daytona pinion housing it would be better. I would use new 31 spline axles.
One thing that I haven't mentioned before, there are large and small axle bearings. The Mustang and Fairlane used the small bearings and trucks and full size cars used the large bearings. I would recommend the large bearings. The sealed ball bearings are fine for street and drag racing, but the tapered roller bearings should be used for auto cross or road racing.

How much power are you going to make, what transmission are you going to use, what tires will be on it and how much will it weigh?
Many times the stock '70s Ford case is good enough for a street car. The only real good case from Ford is the nodular case, and as I said above, one is better than the other.
None of the Ford installed differentials are any good except for the Detroit Locker, and they were installed in VERY few cars from the factory. The factory Ford Trac Lock will break and wipe out the gears and everything else when it does. Look at the picture below. This is from a stock Ford F150. I have a pile of these that are broke. After market differentials are made stronger.
Ford made about a dozen different yokes, so figure out what you need. There are long car yokes and short truck yokes and flanges. There are also 1310, 1330 and 1350 series for the different u joints.

|sqeezeit||Not really hurting for $$$ just checking all options.I know 9" are awsome and my hotrod is a ford, so my initial thought was how good are the different stock units for now, until I get everything figured out or to use in car until I get crazy with it.I plan to make it a monster when done but always easier said then done or time wize that is.|

Yes, any 9" pumpkin will fit a 9" housing, if you plan on cutting the tubes to narrow the rear end you should REALLY have a pro shop do it. Everything has to be aligned properly and welded properly. You can look on ebay, there are quite a few reputable sellers on there with a long history of positive feedback.
I bought my housing from Currie with the billet Torino bearing ends and 31 spline axels for $800 and bought a completely rebuilt 4 pinion 31 spline posi from a vendor on ebay for $500 shipped. This stuff isn't cheap so if you're really hurtin for $$$ then look for a wrecked hipo Mustang or other type Ford with a posi 9" in it.

|sqeezeit||Thanks, so from what I know any 9" center will fit any 9" housing?So I could get any housing(truck one or thicker tube one)and cut/size to fit and get better center, ect...Are there certain centers/third members better then others(stock ones).Not sure what size I need yet but just waying my options on a budget other then just buying new aftermarket one.Thanks again.|

The '57 to '64 housings are the best looking, but the weakest. The truck housings have thicker axle tubes. The housings with the long tapered center are stronger than the housings with the smaller rounded center.
The WAR and WAB cases look stronger because they have extra ribs on the front, but they have a very weak pinion pilot bearing boss. Many people try to pass these off as nodular cases, BUT THEY ARE NOT. There are 2 different nodular cases. One has smaller 2 7/8 bearings and gray iron caps. This one is not the strongest. The other one has 3 1/16 bearings and has nodular iron caps. This is the strongest production case that Ford made.
The standard pinion housing has small bearings in the front and back. The Daytona pinion housing has a much larger inner bearing, but requires a special yoke.
The Ford Traction Lock is weak and should not be used in a high powered car with good tires. After market Traction Locks have a stronger steel case.
I guess everybody knows that the 31 spline axles are better than the 28 spline axles.

Ford 9" info
Does anyone know if there are any bad 9" rear ends?And trying to size one up for hotrod,wondering a good place to look/research more for widths,ect.....I guess in short I know theres lots of little differences as far as identifing in the 9" but not sure other then that.
