Old Chevy rear
We have been racing the original one in our Bocar for thirty years and never pulled shaft out of a bearing. And this is roadrace stuff we do. We've twisted them like candy canes, broke the flanges off, ripped the splines off, but never had one slip out. Finally cured our breakage issues by swapping them out for a pair of narrowed and re-splined '59 buick units. Sounds like the bearing went south and wore the axle down. How did the axle look under the bearing race?

|big gear head||I've seen a few 9 inch Ford axles do that. They were the left side axles in dirt track cars. There was enough force on the axle to pull it out of the bearing. I haven't seen it on a average street car.|

friend of mine has one in his '42 rod pickup. i have used them for years. he was cruising down the road and an axle started coming out! the bearing stayed in place but the retainer ring was loose. he banged the axle back in and limped home. this has never happened to me. how about anyone else? anyone know the cause?
