Barry Cromp posi & gears would be wise concidering all you power is going through your spider gears c-clip eliminators are not a bad idea either

thanks again for the help folks...I have been looking for old Z28 rears, but cannot find any, so I guess I'll just get a gear kit from Richmond and get the installation kit form jegs with shims, lube, ect. Or do I need an installation kit?

novajohnb A clarification on carriers for 8.5" ten bolt. Only 2.41:1 and 2.56:1 ratios had different carriers than all other gears.

I'm used to 12 bolts with a few different carriers...

To answer the original question, you can get new gears now. When you get a posi carrier later, swap the ring gear onto the new carrier. Keep track of the shims (left and right), reinstall and you are good to go.

3.73 Posi.

If budget is a concern then look for a used Z28 1972/1979 8.5 " and it will have 3.73 gears and a posi if it was a four speed car.

redcamaro4spd I plan to use 3.73 ratio and I've checked over catalogs and stuff and I tihnk the 8.5" 10 bolt I have is good, I didn't see any thing mentioning different carriers...

novajohnb You can put gears in now and posi later.

You didn't say how "high" you were going in ratio. You might currently have a series 2 or series 3 carrier. Depending on how high you want to go in ratio #, you might need to use "thick" gears to make up the difference or get a different carrier. (or use gear spacers- but I would advise against them in with any hopped up engine.)

What I'm trying to say is if you want to use the same gears with a posi center section, the current differential and posi differential need to be the same series. Just something to keep in mind.

Swapping from open diff to posi diff is relatively easy, keep track of the shims- left and right side- and install in the same position and the gears will be set up.

redcamaro4spd yeh thats what i meant...And rite now I don't have a traction prob. becuase I have a 2.73 rear with a 305 and a super t10...So the 350 will prolly give me a traction prob., but it hopefully won't be too long b4 the posi...

Hollywooding 'sorry i misread, do you want to put in shorter gears, and then the posi on those gears later?

if that's the case go for the gears now, then the posi after your tired of paying for a new "tire"

Hollywooding Like tubbed said the work can be done at any time, your just doing it twice.

But if cash is tight (like it never isnt) save up and buy the posi, forget spending the dough on 2 units, and only do half the work.
just wait till the clutch is really screwed. and then do it all at once, 'specially if a new motor's going in anyway.

gt2betubbed Hey Red, it will not be a problem to change the gears now, and then the posi later. It's just doing the work twice, and maybe having to buy new gaskets again. That's up to you and if you feel like doing it twice. I do have one thing to say. If you are having a problem with traction, puting in a set of lower gears without a posi is going to make your problem a lot worse. It's fun for smoking em, but not when your next to someone and you both floor it, then he takes off on you while your left in your own smoke...

Here's my situation...

My car, a 1977 Camaro, was converted to a manual from an auto and still has a talll rear gear, we think a 2.73 ratio. I can feel my clutch is starting to slip after only 8 or 9 mnths. I don't have the cash for a posi-unit, which I'll need with the new 350, but I do have the cash for the gears and installation kit. I plan to put the new motor in with a new clutch and soon after have the rear gears replaced. My question is, will it be difficult or impossible to install the posi unit later on and just do the gears now? Or do I have to do it all at once? Thanks for any help or suggestions...
